For the last three days I've been unable to use my mobile phone (cellphone). When I switch it on I get the words 'IMSI failure'. What does this mean and what's the problem? I'd be grateful for any information.

Look here, mate.

IMSI IIRC, is a bit of information that is sent to the network when you switch your phone on, most networks disconnect your phone number if you have not used it for a few months, a call to your network's customer services should have you back up and running usually within 24 hours.

Good luck.

But don't use your mobile phone for this. It doesn't seem to be working.

I used my landline and was told that the network ceased to exist three days ago. N'doubt that kind of thing happens from time to time in the cut-throat of wireless telecoms ...
