Which type of movies inspired by Stephen King books do you prefer?

Do you like movies like Carrie and It, or movies such as Stand by Me, The Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption?

Personally, two of my favorite movies are The Green Mile and Shawshank, but I also like the horror/thriller flicks too.

More often than not Stephen King books do not translate well to the big screen. I regret that I have not seen Shawshank Redemption (I always intended to) but I saw The Green Mile when it was first released and just watched it again on video. I think it's an excellent movie and quite similar to the book which I read after first seeing the movie. As I posted in another thread............

What Makes a Good Movie?

quote:
#1 A script that makes me think about what I'm watching

#2 A great lead actor/actress with good supporting actors/actresses

#3 A plot that has evokes emotion but doesn't get sappy

#4 Some comedy

#5 Suspense

#6 A bit of surprise

#7 A satisifying ending - not necessarily a "they lived happily ever after" ending

One recent movie had all of the above -

THE GREEN MILE

I agree that most of his books don't translate well. Needful Things, for example, was a great book, but because it was so long, most of it was cut out of the movie, and the movie sucked bigtime. I very strongly recommend Shawshank, it has all 7 of those requirements of a good movie.

I remember finding "IT" and "Christine" excellent reads but the movies made me laugh!! I agree with you Pete, "The Shawshank Redemption" was however an EXCELLENT film.

The "Stand" is still one of my favs. I loved the "Green Mile" and I enjoyed "Cujo". "Fire starter" was another fav of mine.

I just finished reading "Hearts In Atlantis", he seems to be getting some of his writing skills back. It was an okay book.

I think that the story the body really was put into movie form by stand by me. As a matter of fact it is my favorite movie. I even have a moniker after a character in the film. Of course it isn't the greatest film ever or by any means the best stepehn king film. It didn't even follow the story line to the t. But it carried out king's mission I think and really made a great film. I sort of related age wise to the kids in the film and just loved it.

Shawshank Redemption! I have seen this movie at least 7 times and I still find myself watching it every time it comes on television.

I agree that most of his books haven't made great movies. The Tommyknockers was a terrible made for TV movie. Misery was made into a very good movie. Kathy Bates was an excellent Annie Wilks.

I prefer the "more human" stories, but I really liked Carrie, Salem's Lot, and especially The Stand!

Well... I've read nearly every one of King's book two or three times... I've seen all the movies that have been made into movies, television series and little odd tv short-things.

The first movie I saw which maintained the integrity of King's story was 'Misery.' It took Rob Reiner directing to get it right.

'The Shining' in it's original incarnation was a classic, but misses the heart of the book.
'Shawshank' was a compelling, stirring film, but really didn't hold to the story. Great film, but I wouldn't really call it a King movie.)
'It' was horrible. Just plain horrible.
'Stand By Me' was a great one too... but I think the original story surpasses it by a mile.
'The Green Mile' was very well done, but visually, it wasn't as good as the way I envisioned the tale in my head. Chalk it up to the notion that some stories are better left up to the individual's own imagination.
'Cujo'... yuck
'Christine' and 'Carrie'... ehhh... just bearable... nothing more.
'Firestarter'... please... no thanks.
''Salem's Lot' wasn't even scary.
Don't even get me started on 'The Lawnmower Man' 'The Tommyknockers' and 'Maximum Overdrive'... there should be laws against such garbage.
'Needful Things' was a waste of film.
'The Stand' was okay... paled in comparison to the read. Molly Ringwald was casting mistake.
I can take or leave 'Pet Cemetary'
'The Running Man' was silly... such a good tale gone awry.
'Quitters Inc.' was pretty good (gotta watch lots of wee-hours television to see this one) and is, in my opinion, one of King's greater short stories.

What did I forget?

I'm a fan of King... always have been.. always will be. Personally, I feel his short stories are far superior to his novels. In the shorts, he doesn't have the time to screw around... bing bang boom... story done and over. No silly turns at the end.
