I am currently reading Vanish by Tess Gerritsen. A friend suggested that I give Gerritsen a try. I like suspense novels in the tradition of Sandford,Lutz,Patterson,Hoag etc. This is my first crack at a Gerritsen novel.

I'm rereading AS Byatt's "Babel Tower" as a book on tape. I had forgotten just how very very good it is. It's funny, she has written some of the best books I have ever read, and yet some of her books I find completely impenetrable - I know that it's English, I recognize all of the words, yet it doesn't make a lick of sense. I come away feeling stupid, yet I don't think that's it, really. I think maybe she is writing, in those books I just don't "get", about experiences that I haven't had - kinda like she's slipped into another dimension, and as I've never been there and can't see it, none of it makes sense to me. Anyone who can made head or tails of the second part of "Angels and Insects", let me know if you think that's the explanation.

I'm reading Saturday (by Ian McEwan). Considering my mom, aunt, uncle, and two cousins read it first, it's in surprisingly good shape for a paperback! I would definately recommend it to anyone looking for a good read. It's not too fast-paced though, since it's only about one day.

Now I'm starting The Dark is Rising.

I just finished "The Ruins" by Scott Smith (author of "A Simple Plan").

Very good, but I've grown rather weary of sad/depressing endings so I didn't care for that. At my age I need a light at the end of the tunnel.

I am really enjoying A Love Divine by Alexandra Ripley. It is superbly researched. It is the imaginary story of Joseph of Arimethea. So very plausible .

Lots of new books out just now - Christmas coming!

Margaret Atwood has a new collection of short stories - she's getting into Alice Munro territory a bit here, mining her childhood and young adulthood. Very very good - I know she's not to everyone's taste, but the last two stories in this collection, about her aging parents, are just about the best short fiction I have ever read.

A new one by Margaret Drabble, too. I used to love her books and eagerly dive in, but the last couple ....I admit I don't know what this last book "The Sea Lady" is about. There were bits I enjoyed, but she lost me for the most part.

Just into new Ruth Rendell, "The Water's Lovely" - standard fare for her, seems like, which means very good.

Currently I am reading "The Bookseller of Kabul". It's a true story of a man who lives in Kabul and of course, sells books. It was recommended to me by someone working with my husband in Afghanistan. I had read and then sent to him "The Kite Flyer" which prompted this recommendation.

Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card, mainly because I was fascinated by the first four books he wrote.
Well, I'm also readind Introduction to Electrodynamics by David J. Griffiths, but that's not nearly as interesting...

I am currently reading Barbara Tuchman's
'The First salute'. She analyses the territorial rivalries that determined Europe's role in the American War of Independence. A great read.

I've read that. It felt a little slow in some places but overall I liked it.

Among the books I've recently read are Simon Winder's "The Man Who Saved Britain", a different book about James Bond that places the Bond books and movies in the historical context of Britain's losing her Empire after WW2. A fascinating read. I'm now reading "The Book That Changed My Life" and "You've Got To Read This Book!", about writers and other people who talk about the books that made a difference in their lives.

I'm currently reading Consent to Kill by Vince Flynn. It's the fourth book in the Mitch Rapp series. Mr. Rapp is a counterterrorism agent for the US CIA. Basically, an assassin killer.

Haven't gotten much read though, lately. Been sick.

I just finished The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield which I got for Christmas. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good story. It's well-written, engaging and has great atmosphere. It reminded me a bit of Wuthering Heights.

Right now, I'm reading "The Mayor of Castro Street." It's a biography of Harvey Milk. There's supposed to be a movie coming out this year and I want to read the book before it does.

Yay ! May I borrow that one when you're finished, Indie? I hear the movie is coming along admirably ~ and that the book is even better!
