Ok, it's officially TOO HOT here. It was 111F today. At 11pm last night, it was still 90F.

Yesterday was a bit cooler, but still no rain in this area of South East England. The ground is parched, and lawns are mostly dry, brown stubble. The worst effect in my own garden (back garden that is - not yard), has been that all the fish in the medium size pond have died, probably through oxygen depletion due to increased decomposition of dead vegetation, leaves, etc. This is the first time this has happened, and I've always before left the pond murky until after all the tadpoles have metamorphosed into frogs! Without fish to eat them, the pond became an ideal breeding place for mosquitos, and there were tens of thousands of their larvae visible. I tried scooping them out, and sometimes caught over a hundred in a single sweep, but their numbers were just too great.
With most of our windows open at night, huge numbers of mosquitos are definitely not wanted, so I've filled in the pond, and paved over it to make a rather nice patio area which fits quite well into the landscaped garden. My only regret is for the poor frogs which will now have to find somewhere else to breed and cool off. No frogs died, by the way, in filling in the pond as it was emptied first, and they were caught and deposited in the shrubbery. I have a couple of large rainwater butts, which collect run-off from the house gutters, and these have drip pans under the taps. A few of the frogs have taken up residence in these pans, so all is not lost for them - though they get emptied out into the patio plants every few days! Last week, on a particularly hot day, I'd forgot to put the drip pan back, and found a frog sitting under the tap having a slow, one drip every 15 seconds or so, cooling shower!

A short repreieve for me, then by this weekend, we'll be back up over 100°F. On Sunday, it only reached 92°F, four below our normal.

Oh Aramis, you are making me feel SO guilty. I have a sprinkler which I switch on from time to time and have a lovely green lawn and most of my plants in my backgarden have survived (unlike those at the front of the house). The other day I gave it a couple of hours worth of water then it rained in the night!

Our reservoirs are still 80% full and we have no hosepipe ban in force. We also have a desalination plant which can be brought into use but it is very expensive to run, it is oil-fired, they only use it when desperate and a hosepipe ban is in force.

You sound comfortable . There aren't any limitations here, but it's still very hot. It's been in the 90s since the end of May, and in the 80s since mid April. Pretty much a two-season area, the only way you can distinguish Autumn from Summer is that the leaves are falling off the trees in the former.

115 in my car just now in the central valley of California.
I'm trying to get the AC fixed or replaced from the home I'm selling where the AC works.
Not easy...no one's answering the phones, plus they've had power outages throughout the state.

My parents have one of those barometer gadgets - it predicts for 24h in the future - sometimes.

I don't get the connection, barometers measure atmospheric pressure, not temperature! High pressure usually means fine, clear weather, and low pressure wet or windy weather, but both weather conditions can be associated with either cold or heat.

I think that is in response to an earlier post of mine in which I mentioned my barometer forecasting rain.

Mine is an electronic one too, it supposedly predicts weather about 24 hours ahead too. It is showing possible rain to come, again, so I will leave off the watering.

Speaking about barometers - it makes me laugh when you say you have an electronic one. I have the opposite; mine is from a very old design - basically a jug of coloured water with a thin glass tube attached. When the atmostpheric pressure is high, the water in the main chamber goes down, and that in the tube rises. You do not get precise readings, but the changes are very dramatic, and it is accurate compared to my 'real' barometer. It's also very beautiful.

Mine is very 'gadgety', shows temperature (you can flick it from F to C), humidity percentage, graphics showing the anticipated weather in about 24 hours time, the presssure, the the pressure changes over the past 24 hours and the time - all very grand and high tech.

We were back over 100°F today (101°F in fact), and no one was anticipating it.

It didn't feel quite as hot, mainly due to the fact that the humidity was low.

Oh Dave, you poor thing. I hesitate to tell you that we seem to have hit monsoon season here. We've had rain almost every day for a whole week. We either get the kind of rain that falls all day (like today) or the kind where the heavens open and three inches fall in the space of an hour, accompanied by thunder and lightning (like last night at suppertime).
It's warm in between times though.

I've become quite ill this week due to the heat a combination of not being able to cool down and lack of sleep or food (I'm too hot to eat).

Pythongirl, I totally hear you on this one. Last Friday my air conditioner in my apartment broke during 100-110 C heat. It didn't get fixed until Wednesday this week. During that time I was so hot (I live on the second floor), and the heat made me feel very sick as well. I even had to take a day off sick at work. So I feel your pain!

The heat in Texas is relentless! I've seen 15 days over 100°F this month, and it's just rolled into the 17th of the month. On average, Dallas sees 16 days over 100°F, and yesterday was # 34 on the year, the first occurring on April 17. It was 104°F (40°C) yesterday.

Can anyone tell me what 75°F (24°C) feels like?

Edit to add: the weather forecasters are forecasting 107° or 108°F (42-43°C) for tomorrow. Yuck!

Can't wait for October, as September is still usually hot.
