I went to see Castaway starring Tom Hanks.

I really liked this one alot. Tom Hanks is just terrific. He is so good at making us like him. He plays "normal" so well.

The movie is well made and flew by so fast. I found myself wanting more. I wanted to see more of Chuck's life after the island.

Surprisingly there is a co-star on the island....Wilson the volleyball. Chuck creates a companion out of a volleyball he names Wilson. The relationship he has with that ball is better and more real than most relationships are between two people in the movies!! It's very moving.

I liked this movie...I'd give it a 8 out of 10.

I liked this movie. There was no overpowering use of music to build us up to some thrill or fright. We were allowed to experience the reality of the event through the sounds of what was happening on the screen. Tom Hanks did what many of us would have done in the same situation over the course of his stay on the island. Hanks and Hunt both share their feelings with each other and us. They say what we need and want them to say. And we're glad they did. Go see this film. You'll be glad you did.

i liked the movie also, the beach scenes were great, even though there wasnt much sound, except for the ocean and wind, it didnt seem strange, the only think i didnt like was the ending, i think it dragged on, they tried to come full circle, it didnt work for me, they should have ended it sooner, otherwise id still recommend it..

I also think the end dragged somewhat..I would have rather seen more of his survival techniques while on the island.

Also...I want to know what was in that dang BOX!

CC it wasn't what was in the box that was important. The significance of the box was what it represented to him. It gave him a sense of purpose. Didn't you get the feeling that it was something that gave him hope, something to look forward to? It's human nature to look with anticipation to some event, even if it's just waking up the next day. What would it be like to have nothing to look forward to (who would want to wake up totally alone day after day). You'd have to create something or suffer the consequences. The package was symbolic of his need to get off the island and return it. There is nothing that could have been put in that package that would have made us go, ahhhhhhh.

Ya know what get's me about the package? remember when the raft is in shambles towards the end of the raft part? (I'm trying to be obtuse here, so only people who've seen it will know what I'm refering to) Well, I don't remember seeing the package then. And how did he manage to keep THAT onboard while losing "other things"?
(But then the film wouldn't have been the same without the package...so I'm glad "it made it back" too. however it was accomplished)
As to the end...I thought it was perfect. The "message" he said he discovered when he was on the Island (He tells us about it in front of the friends fireplace.) That's the message of the movie! And when he says he's lost his compass...he finds it when he's presented with his "crossroads" of decision. And that smile tells you which direction the needle of his compass is now pointing. At least that's what I got out of it.
(Obtuse enough? I hope so. If you saw it I think you'll know what I'm talking about...If you haven't...I think these are general enough terms that I'm not giving anything away anymore than the previews might.)

I agree with you on all points Cohalen. I thought about that package being missing too. And wondered how it managed to "survive" when the raft was so ravaged. You are right about the message too, and I think you've been discreet enough. Maybe those who go to see the movie after reading your post will pay closer attention to the "message".

About that package though. Wouldn't it be Ironic if, after opening all the other packeges, this one had a Cell phone that the military uses? (I forget the name, but that can call from ANYWHERE via sattelite linkup)
Or a self-inflating raft, swimfins; goggles and afive minute mini-respirator? (He could have gone under the wave brake bu the reef and then inflted the raft and gone from there)
Or a first aid kit?
Or matches.
But in the end...it still wouldn't have mattered What was in it. The reason he wouldn't open it was that it would mean he'd given up leaving the Island. He kept it like a promise...that he WOULD deliver that package...SOMEDAY. (That's why he wrote that note on it.)

I realise the significance of the unopened box but still like Cohalen said, wouldn't it be ironic if...

Plus being in the unique art/fine craft business I really wanted to see just what is was that she was creating in that workshop...Looked very interesting to me.

Well, he still got off the Island and the movie didn't immediately end! they coulda done all that other stuff (though it woulda put Holly in a much worse light)! I mean, He doesn't make it to the Island any better than...that other chap. End of Movie. They coulda still streched it out. (Ever see Sunset Blvd? Now THAT'S stretching the "end" of a movie!)

Sure, have all the popcorn you want It's the Jumbo size with the free refill! Y'all have some too! Hungree? Annie? Craigal? Bueller?

Make mine an extra large.

I watched Castaway last weekend and really enjoyed it.

I do beleive that Tom Hanks performance was better that Russell Crowe in the Gladiator. Tom Hanks has the advantage I guess in that Castaway is a movie that is more about the main character than Gladiator is.

I found myself wondering how they would finish the film. I thought to myself what would be be the best way to end and I could not come up with a good solution myself.

Anyway, have to go.

Cheers

Craig

See Cohalen, that's what I mean. Craig said it. Can't think of a better ending, can you? Can you? Maybe you can start a "write a new ending" thread in here Cohalen. I'd love to see how you think the movie could be improved.
Thanks for the popcorn, by the way. Would you pass the salt please.
