I am based in India. I would like to come to the USA. It has always been my aim to work in the US. I am a Computer graduate, not an engineer though. I am really not sure as to how the system works. Would it be possible for me? Could you please let me know the procedure and the scopes that I can have there?

I would recommend visiting the website of the American Embassy, if you cannot find one for India then look at the one for London. http://www.usembassy.org.uk/

Whatever you do, do not attempt to visit the US then take up work illegally.

Visiting the US is best. From what I understand from a friend of mine from Bangladesh who is here, you have to have a job here that will sponsor your work visa for you to come here.

There is a 'green card lottery' and for 2007, India is an excluded country, as is the UK - there are seventeen excluded countries for 2007.

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/iv/dvinfo.html

You will see links to four embassies in India on the website to which I have provided a link.

Check out http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov/, it give you the links to the other three embassies in India.

Thanks for your piece of advice. I hardly have any idea about the jobs visas in the US. Could you please give me more information as to how to find out the jobs in the US being in India? It would be a favour. I appreciate your time and patience.

As I understand it, it is unlikely that you will be able to work in the US unless, as Ladymacb29 says, that you get a sponsor and that is easier said than done.

Most countries will either want you to have special skills which local people do not have, or have close links with the country. It is not going to be easy to work in the US in the same way that it wouldn't be easy for people from the US or UK to work in India.

Contact the American Emabssy by all means, but don't expect too much.

You would have to find a job the way any normal person would - look online and call up or email the various companies. But you have to tell them you would need them to sponsor a work visa for you to come over - many smaller employers will not be able to as that costs the employer money.

It is quite possible that such a visa might not be granted unless you have some very specialised skills.

You may also be able to find a job in your country that has departments and offices here in the U.S. (or one from here that has offices there). Then you could see about transferring here. I have a friend from India that worked for a jewelry company in India and then was transferred to the New York office and spends a good amount of time here. He goes back to India about once a year for a few weeks and then comes back to work here in the states.

Why run the risk of being outsourced when you can be the outsourcee?

B/W if you are applying for Visa, there are two consulates - one in Delhi and another In Chennai.

If you come to Chennai, please avoid the red scarf lady (of course, you have no choice in this matter.

(Caveat: While I have no experience in regards to the above mentioned advice, A lot of my friends (who have gone to US for studies) have corroborated this story.)
