I have been giving this some thought since posting. Probably the most hideous gift was a joke (at least I hope it was a joke), it was a little plastic figurine with a mop of red hair, it was awful. I was in my 40s at the time.

I was once UPSed a new cordless drill as a declaration of passion/ I'm sorry/ can't live without you . Believe it or not - it was just what I wanted and had just the effect the dizzy sender hoped it would.

Until it was explained to me, a guess an empty paint tin, beautifully decorated, and with a sturdy spoon attached to it with a ribbon, was a bit of a puzzle. I thought it was to bang with the spoon to relieve my frustrations. Turned out to be a tin in which to put odds and ends. It still gets banged from time to time.

One year for Christmas I got this ornamental reindeer with a rocking horse base and bags of toys draped across its back. It was about 10 inches tall and almost a foot long I should think. I swear that at one point it was one of those kits you buy where it comes plain and you paint it yourself. It was made out of that epoxy type of stuff that's definitely not china, but is more delicate than a plastic. There was a maker's stamp anywhere on it.
It was extremely gaudy, and not my taste at all. I can't imagine what my face was like when I opened it because I thought it was truly awful. My MIL brought it out from another room (she didn't put it under the tree for fear it would be broken) and gave it to me like she was giving me some treasured family heirloom. I'm quite sure that she picked it up at a Flea Market or a garage sale.
Ah well, this was from the same woman who gave me a fork (just one) that you use for escargot in my stocking. (I don't eat escargot).
