Got to see Wonder Boys on dvd this weekend.
Terrific movie! Stars Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr., and Katie Holmes.
It's based on the novel by Michael Chabon (good writer) and directed by Curtis Hanson (who also directed LA Confidential)
It's a funny and warm, character driven story. Grady Tripp (Douglas) is the main character. Grady is a pot-smoking, drifting, creative writing professor whose first novel was a critical and popular success. That was 7 years ago though and now everyone thinks he has writer's block...but he doesn't...he has the opposite...he can't stop writing his 2nd novel. He's got no ending, so he just keeps writing...even though he's over 2600 pages!
Grady is sleeping with the chancellor of the college...Sarah (McDormand) and Sarah is pregnant with his child. Both Sarah and Grady are married to other people...
Tobey Maguire is James Leer...an exceptionally gifted writing student who is also a slighty troubled young man.
Katie's character lives in Grady's house and she worships him as a writer.
Robert Downey is Grady's editor who is in town for the weekend and hoping to see the book he's been waiting years for.
Over the course of one weekend Grady and his friends face some things and deal with thier circumstances....all with some really funny side effects.
I really liked this a lot. I'd give it 8 out of 10 stars.
