i was very anxious to see "hannibal". i had heard mixed reviews about it, but i wanted to see for myself. "silence of the lambs" is one of my favorite movies, and i thought if "hannibal" was half as good, it might become another favorite of mine. boy, was i wrong!!! i was very disappointed with the film. for one thing, the absence of jodie foster made it almost unbearable to sit through. julianne moore is no clarice starling, IMO. the plotline of the movie wasn't exciting, and i thought the acting of all parties involved was way over the top. so, for all the hype this movie received, and since i was so gung-ho about seeing it, i was truly let down. i'm sure there are plenty more that i could name, but this is the one movie that springs to mind at the moment.

A couple that I was really disappointed by recently were "Eyes Wide Shut" and "The Blair Witch Project". "Eyes Wide Shut" was extremely ponderous and was one of those movies where the character development was so thin that I really didn't care WHAT happened to the main players, I wasn't rooting for them, I wasn't rooting against them, frankly, I couldn't have cared less. This was doubly disappointing when you consider how long it took to make (about three years, I think) and that it was the final film of one of the greatest directors in history, Stanley Kubrick, and yet it was flatter than a possum that's been run over by a road grader. Total el stinko! And that "Blair Witch" thing! In my book, the single most insidiously concieved and executed fleecing of the movie going public in film history. No acting, no script, no story really, a budget of about 15 dollars, and given the production values they exhibited they wasted even this, a total waste of eyeball juice!

Not that it was really hyped or anything, but "Kingpen". Any movie that has a 5 minute puke scene is just not IT for me.

Star Wars: Phantom Menace. All hype and special effects. No plot, no characters. Sigh.

I think it's a great idea to take a kid to a film with subtitles. I have a friend whose children want to watch television and she wants them to read. They compromise: watch tv without sound, but with close-captioning. Eyes Wide Shut was bunk. American Beauty Shakespeare In Love Titanic Gladiator

gosh, o.c. i can pretty much agree with every movie you've listed, with the exception of "gladiator" which i didn't see, but didn't ever have much interest in it. let's go have lunch sometime and discuss movies--terrible or otherwise. LOL!!!

I believe this discussion, also began in the Book Corner- under Book vs Movie, where I predicted "Hannibal" would be a big disappointnment. Also, the "Phantom Menace"...has anyone read the book...for the next series of movies...? There are good Foreign films out there- it seems US film makers has lost the "touch"...there is the series called "Decalogue" which is unusually boring- but its poignancy is unequaled...go see it!

I'm not going to talk about movies that were bunk because the list is endless. However they do a good thing in one way, they allow you to truely appreciate a *good* film. But what i'd like to ask is when you feel ripped off after seeing a film is it because you have been swayed by the *hype*, and if so, is it the previews (cinema)or the advertsiing (TV) that does this? The fact that the majority of previews made are constructed by companies that have no relation to the actual production of the film, they are PR companies trying to sucker you into going to see, going to pay... look at previews next time your are in the cinema, how many have shown guns or sex when these instances can take up to a total of 2-3min screen time and have no real connection to the movie. here is an article that kinda sums up what i was trying to say article [ 06-04-2001: Message edited by: contrapunctus ]

I thought The Mexican was a horrible disappointment. I really liked all the stars and the trailors looked fairly interesting. I went to it with my friend and we kept looking at each other with these dumbfounded looks. When we got out of the theater, we were like, 'How did that happen?'. It still astounds me to think that those stars managed to get themselves talked into making such a rotten movie. I'm glad I went to it when I was home, though, and only paid $4.50, because if I had seen it in NYC for $9.50, I probably would have been furious!

Decalogue...is that the 10 part series by Krzysztof Kieslowski? Good god...you are a miracle worker if you can sit through that entire film. Speaking of overhyped, can someone please explain to me why the movie "Life is Beautiful" was raved about so incessantly? Perhaps the people who were raving desired to mimic the main character played Benigni. I'm not here to trash the film, it was decent. But what made it any better than the other 50 excellent films a year (as opposed to the trash) produced in Europe? I thought the film was cute, and certain portions poignant, but overall, overhyped. In addition, I concur on "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". It took mainstream America this long to finally notice a typical Hong Kong style, fancified gong fu fest? I can think of 12 other Chinese or HK produced films that I enjoyed more. The original story was adhered to quite nicely in this film, and of course the big budget helped create some enjoyable special effects (too much "flying" though), but the film did not deserve the massive hype it enjoyed and certainly not an oscar nomination. Anyhow, please argue if you disagree!
