Recently, a man shot and killed a deputy and injured another in Polk County. He was found 100 yds from the scene, hiding in a log. He has been caught since.

What's your opinion of shootings like these, such as the ones in other areas of the country?

From what I understand, he wasn't caught - he was shot and killed.

I think my opinion is that of most anyone's - someone who will shoot and kill another being then run has the propensity to continue on that behaviour.

A link to the story would be good, then we could read it before commenting.

Having said that, being a typical Brit I have to say that I find the whole gun situation in countries like the US to be totally out of order. The easy availability of guns is always going to be a problem.

He was killed after becoming apprehended.

And I don't know of an online news story about it...my school went on lockdown, that's how I first heard of it.

Actually according to the following article, he was never apprehended. They found him, he showed a weapon and then he was shot and killed.

From watching "Bowling for Columbine", Canada also has a large number of guns out in the public, but they don't have nearly as many gun-related problems as the U.S. does.

Thanks Jar, it is helpful to have a link to stories in this particular forum as most of the world will not know what is being discussed.

LadyM, many people are like me and think that every third person in the US is toting a gun whereas commonsense tells us this cannot be true, it just seems like it at times. Gun crime is present in the UK but accidental shootings and shootings in school (barring the Dumblane massacre) is virtually unknown.

I'm afraid it is truer than you might think. My old neighborhood probably had a rate of gun ownership that was very high. We did have several law enforcement officials on the block, but it wasn't at all unusual to hear them mentioning their guns.

I'm surprised the Florida deputy shootings made national news with the school shootings this past few days.
I think these things happen so often elsewhere that they probably go unnoticed.
I noticed the news popping up on my Yahoo news.

But if gun ownership=high murder rate, you ought to see the highest murder rates among the hunting communities, but we know it's not true. It's the access to guns by those who have not been taught to respect the guns, who have grown up in a 'gang' culture, and/or who have not been taught how to properly use them that creates the problems.
