<< I'm usually fairly hot on words, but I just discovered the Americans say solder with a silent L. News to me! >>

They say what sounds like "sauter".

Don't ask me why. I've always thought it very strange.

I never noticed the Americans pronouncing soldier like that.

I learned what a Lucky Ducky is and that it is Sues Birthday today.

Not soldIER, soLder. It sounds like sodder or sauter (as Terry wrote). It means to –verb (used with object) 3. to join (metal objects) with solder.
4. to join closely and intimately: two fates inseparably soldered by misfortune.
5. to mend; repair; patch up.

Sorry Gamemaster I did not read it properly. Now it makes more sense to me.

I just learned that "solder" without the L is an American pronunciation. I had no idea! How do the rest of you pronounce it -- "saulder", "sohlder", or what?

It is pronounced sodder around my neck of the woods too.

It was always "sole-der" in Australia.

Or, more accurately, "sole-dah" given the Aussie accent! My Aussie accent is 80% gone though, so I say the in-between "sohl-der". You should have seen the look on my wife's face when I mentioned a "soldering iron".

We Aussies aren't big fans of silent or pretend letters. We just say what it says

My wife gets all excited and silly around those squished penny machines. She just likes mushing up pennies I think.

At least it's easy to keep her entertained

I thought that quiz was really neat when I edited it.

I learned that hummingbird nectar doesn't have to be red and in fact, we don't know if red dye isn't harmful to the poor dears!

A standard IP address consists of 4 numbers, each less than or equal to 255.

I knew it was a sequence of four numbers but didn't know they were under 255.

I don't like birthdate questions either! I mean, I realize that "trivia" is about unimportant information, but c'mon... who cares about remembering something THAT trivial?
