As an American I have to say that I like vegemite. Quite a lot, actually. But I also have to say that (when a kind soul sent me some from Australia - it's next to impossible to find where I live) every person I insisted try it over here just hated it. Truth is, most spit it out in a hurry. The USA is very obsessed with sweets and such. Vegemite is too salty for most, I reckon. To the majority of Americans, though, I doubt if anyone'd notice it being "off the shelf". It's just not the sort of thing that people like over here, sad to say. We're an odd bunch. Nobody likes anchovies either on this side of the world. I do.

Well hold on folks, could be we may well lose Marmite, too. I found this article which states there is folate in Marmite. Marmite I wonder if someone complained about Vegemite and so the goverment decided to get tough. You know, like one of those laws where it is not enforced unless someone complains? How long before this is discovered?

New Zealand Marmite is slightly different, UK Marmite has folic acid which I think is the synthetic form of folate. http://www.marmite.co.uk/love/nutrition/ingredients.htmlFolate: What is it? Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in food. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate that is found in supplements and added to fortified foods [1]. http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/folate.asp#h1

So which tastes better Sue, NZ Marmite or UK Marmite? By the way, I have tried Vegemite. Yuck -- can't say that I'll miss it. Have not found Marmite though. Edited to add: Now I'm confused. We cannot add Folate to anything other than breads and cereals. Yet Folic Acid is sold as a vitamin supplement. So other than Folate being "natural" and Folic Acid being the imposter, what is the difference? Folic Acid is one of the B vitamins I take every day. It is also in multivitamins. What's the deal?

Bount to be the UK version, the original Marmite. I assume the New Zealand one ight be made to be similar to that other product made downunder.
It seems to only be the addition of the natural folate which is banned.

Oh ho..I guess we'll have those Americans who need their fix coming to Canada, just like they do for our prescription drugs.

That is just stupid. What's wrong with vegemite? It's one the best spreads in the world. This makes me so mad. It's blatant disrespect for the Australian culture. If people want to eat vegemite in the USA, it should be allowed, as much as it is here in Australia.

Seeing that these two spreads aren't that popular here in the states, I had never heard of Vegemite till I started playing on this site. I am still not 100% what it is like, and now this post is the first I've ever heard of Marmite.
Okay, I've admitted my ignorance. So, what exactly do these two contain and taste like, and how hard were they to find here before the ban?

Aussies won the "Ugg Boot" war and in this war we have not yet begun to fight. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is Vegemite. Vegemite at all costs - Vegemite in spite of all terrors - Vegemite, however long and hard the road may be, for without Vegemite there is no survival.

Strange bunch those Americans... Heard that they ask the South Africans coming into the USA if they have 'biltong' (jerky) now and confiscate it too. People have been taking it into the USA and UK for yonks. I wonder what other (legal) products people are smuggling into other countries.... mmmm

Whether it has been going on for years or not, it is still illegal. Commercial importers are different, they can get dispensation provided they comply with regulations. I must admit to haveing received some jerky at times from the US, it arrives in vacuum packaging and has so far escaped detection. It doesn't present a health problem, I eat it too quickly. I can buy biltong locally, but have only found it in a couple of shops, must try to find some more, it is yummy.
