Not actually similar, except for the shape of the bottle. I like Bovril too, especially as a drink.

As an American I have to say that I like vegemite. Quite a lot, actually. But I also have to say that (when a kind soul sent me some from Australia - it's next to impossible to find where I live) every person I insisted try it over here just hated it. Truth is, most spit it out in a hurry. The USA is very obsessed with sweets and such. Vegemite is too salty for most, I reckon. To the majority of Americans, though, I doubt if anyone'd notice it being "off the shelf". It's just not the sort of thing that people like over here, sad to say. We're an odd bunch. Nobody likes anchovies either on this side of the world. I do.
I second that opinion—Vegemite is great stuff! I’m a bit surprised to hear of the difficulty you have finding it. I live waaaay out in the sticks by “normal people’s” standards and I can purchase it locally at a natural food/health food store...have to drive 65+ miles to get there, but it seems to me that if Vegemite can be found in the hills of West Virginia it aught to be readily available out in the real world. (You can keep the anchovies, though!)
Also, rumor has it that some stores in the Kroger grocery chain carry it since it’s a Kraft product, but when we checked with the closest Kroger’s here they looked at us like we were from Mars: “Vege-what???” I was tempted to say, in my best fake Aussie accent, “No mate, you have it all wrong: Australia, I say! It comes from the land down under—like the kangaroos, matey; like the roos--not from the next blimey planet out the way!”...but I behaved myself.
If neither of those suggestions are helpful, I’ve found this place out of Washington (http://www.simplyoz.com/) for mail order. I’ve not yet had the opportunity to order from them, but they have the best prices I could find—even cheaper than my health food store!
To the person who wondered what Vegemite was like... I would describe it as gooey, brown stuff that resembles soy sauce in flavor; only a good deal stronger. If you like soy sauce, you could probably handle Vegemite. Beginners are advised to spread lightly. I like to fancy myself an advanced user (read: I scrape every last possible drop from the jar with my finger and then lick my finger clean!) I eat mine just plain (no butter), spread on bread—makes a great energy snack!

It's like somone was playing chinese whispers and the end result was "America is going to ban Vegemite" and in a week when we found out that the yanks did poison Phar Lap then Iraq would have been the lesser problem for George W. It would have been war. My son basically lives on Vegemite (no, really) it's one of the few things he eats and has 6 and up sandwiches a day. We wouldn't be able to go to the US if they had banned it - the kid would starve!

What about it dear, you might as well ask what about peanut butter too, or marmalade.

I have two pieces of toast with Marmite on them to start the day ...every day. I can't say I've tried Vegemite but I think there's no need to look further than lovely Marmite! Try the following in sandwiches:- Marmite and peanut butter. Marmite and cheese spread. Marmite and strong cheddar cheese.

Sue, what about an option for I'd heard of them but don't want to try them? For those of us who've never tried it, we can only choose "I was ignorant until FT enlightened me" and "OOh, yes, pass the jar, please." lol

I'm just glad to see that I wasn't the only one who hadn't heard of it. Oh, and thanks au_natural for explaining a bit about it. Still can't say that I want to try it, but even so, I really don't having ever seen any here.

I have a jar of both and like both of them but I have to say that I like the vegemite better. But I can't have any on my toast if my husband's around. He thinks they both smell awful.
