Might I point out that, the only way to consume marmite is on toasty soldiers smothered with butter and then spread lightly with marmite. I have no knowledge of vegemite but the name alone conjure's up less than pleasant visions of cabbage and turnip in a bottle accompanied, when consumed, by chronic meteorism. Taken in moderation, the only thing one has to bother about is (apart from slight wind) a moderate discolouration of the teeth and tongue and a grimy appearance to the fingers, especially under the nails, (marmite gets everwhere). We have an acquaintence in the US and perforce must send him a regular supply of marmite: indeed, when we do not, the complaint is immediate and vociferous. One thing that might be worth remembering tho', if you suffer from gout, then, avoid the stuff like the living plague! I must now heave myself and my bandaged extremeties into an upright position and go off to hunt out some more marmite.

Guess what I got in the mail today? Thanks so much for the sample of Marmite Sue. I will likely have it with toast tomorrow, and let you know what I think!

I think I much prefer the substance you sent me Skunkee, than the vegemite/marmite thing.I've tried both, and, it's an acquired taste.
Skunkee sent me a product of her country and I'm still reeling over it.
I do like Miso however and I"m sure it's similar to Vegemite.

Well it came, I saw and I tried it! I am sorry to report that I don't really like either Marmite or Vegemite (and I did spread it really thin Sue). However, at the risk of offending my Australian friends, I found Marmite less objectionble than vegemite. It really must be an acquired taste.
The product that Bruyere is referring to is maple sugar candy. It's considerably different (and way sweeter) from either Marmite or Vegemite (and unfortunately unsuitable for diabetics Sue!)

Miso paste is fermented soy that you use in Japanese cooking. I had a friend who ate it on toast but honestly, at the time I couldn't understand it. He wasn't Japanese! However, I like it in soup as it's very soothing. It has a very similar taste to your ites.
The maple leaf candy was very very good.

Hold your horses, another taste test is on the way! Sue, I received my marmite today. Thank you! The taste test is scheduled this week. I am still in the process of recovering from two different infections this week, on 3 different antibiotics, a slew of meds, plus some discouraging lab results from my oncologist. I am waiting until my taste buds are back to normal along with my normal good cheer! Until then, hang in there both veggies and marmies: more Americans are ready to weigh in!

Oh, I forgot. A few posts ago we were discussing the Amish blend of peanut butter, marshmallow, and corn syrup that is served in their restaurants. I know I told Copago I would try to send her some. I found some here in town at an Amish deli and bought some, so if you are still interested Copago, send me a PM and I will figure out how to ship it to you. Fortunately, it is in a plastic squeeze bottle. Anyone else, let me know!

I am eagerly waiting to share my 'testing' results with you all as soon as possible. Seems like Romania is too small and/or hidden and the posties are still trying to find their way around. ** Nice to see you again, Lee ! Hope you'll feel better soon.**

ozzz2002: Oh............how very cruel. Empire.....tatters? Gulp...sob. Must we, like some old Prize-Fighter, make a comeback in order to convince you that Marmite, and only Marmite, may rule? Marmite is all that has held the Royal Family together over all these years. An embrace by a consumer of Marmite is everlasting (sticky clothes, sticky fingers, sticky lips) and can never be parted. Are you not aware that Marmite is used as the principle adhesive for Australian cosmetic surgery and that the recipients of such new found (and boundless) beauty are in fact eating themselves and are now screaming for Marmite? As for Vegimite: it is rumoured that several thousand tons of this stuff has been shipped to Pakistan as most effective fertilizer, or was it to act as stronger than concrete agent in order to hold back the land slip so prevelent in that part of the world? I can't quite remember.
