Ahh, you have all pulled a miracle...the first time I have laughed out loud since some depressing labs results Tuesday.

I have decided that Vegemite and/or Marmite might work better than my chemo did, if it can survive a nuclear war! Very funny!

denni19...thanks for the good thoughts and wishes. Love your avatar, it is so peaceful looking.

Speaking of peaceful, I'm off to wait for more of your battles.

My taste test is scheduled for this weekend. My husband has agreed that if his football team loses to mine, he will squeeze down a whole tube of Vegemite. He has no idea what it tastes like or any other side effects. Will let you know...it will serve him right. I forgot what I bet, but I never keep my promise anyway!

I just realized that I was the top of page 9! This battle is going to rival the length of some of those ancient British wars!!

When hostilities die down in this forum it will only be for a short time, one never knows when the war will erupt once more. I wonder how many threads there are in total which involve Marmite and Vegemite.

Mmm, dunno 'bout that lot Trojan, but if eating sump oil is all that's holding the Royal Family together then I can't say I'm surprised at how they turned out . . . and as for the yeast continuing to grow, mmm, fuzzy haired Royalty huh? Can just see Phil the Greek with an afro! Lol!

Tut! Might I point out that sump oil is sipped (genteely through a straw if royalty) and not eaten. And as for Phil and an afro? Afros are out, far too seventies, although his ceremonials do have flared bottoms and he maintains that jaunty style walk, particularly when the Queen slaps on a calypso/kebab barbi. Prince Philip is a credit to the Marmite fraternity and would doubtless be amused at the sight of Vegemite consumers wandering aimlessly around the bush with those strange little green shoots sprouting out behind their ears.

Ok, this may seem like a trivial question, but is there a particular kind of bread that is best with these? White, wheat, rye, sourdough, french ...?

Here I am, after a fabulous Marmite and Vegemite supper.

I've tried everything I could think of - eat it on rye toast, on white fresh bread, with and without butter, very thin spread, 'obese' spread, eating directly from the tube and finally, eating them mixed together.

First thing to say is that I couldn't detect any peculiar smell/fragrance about any of them, both have a natural foody smell, not a 'motor-oil' one.

I already said I did eat Marmite before, so for that one I knew exactly what to expect and was actually looking forward to re-taste it. Vegemite is great too! And tastes similar to Marmite only a tad more bitter (at least according to my tastebuds), also it has a richer/denser texture and stronger taste.

Many of you have said in here that one needs to acquire the taste for Vegemite before completely falling in love with it. So maybe because this was my very first 'close encounter' with the thing I couldn't consider it better than Marmite.
I sincerely hope this will change in the near future, once I get to the bottom of the tube (it shouldn't take long, one third of it is gone already ).

That is to say that, as we speak, Marmite Rules! for this Romanian alien.

I would also like to add that even if British and Aussies go very well together here on FT, M & V don't! Not for me, and I've been known to eat weird food combinations . I like them both but each with its distinct flavour. Mixing them tasted like medicine.

Another thing - I liked both at the most as thick spread on buttered rye toast.

Now I have to apologise to those who might feel sad about my present decision - please don't mind my opinion, I am a non-sensitive, untrained 'tongue'

And to end with this culinary report, I loved Bovril as a drink.

Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, to Sue and Copago who made it all possible for me.

*To bullyb - Thank you for nice comment about my avatar. I was just about to change it, but I will leave it be.

Bovril is also good on hot buttered toast. As Ren is coming here for Christmas and New Year (heaven help me) I will be making sure I stock up on the largest size Bovril.

Did you vote Mada?

denni19: Joy Oh joy! Tho' the Colonies may have sunk into a gastronomic wilderness it is uplifting for the spirit to know, that in Romania civilization refuses to be crushed by the onslaught of culinary immitations.
Marmite shall always be king. This is not to put down Vegemite; it certainly has its uses, most of them in the field of engineering.

My local supermarket isn't proud, it puts them side by side on the shelf.

Oh man, you lot crack me up! And to top it all off I just read Gat's 'face changing' post and laughed even more. (sorry Gat's!)

Yay, it finally arrived! I was beginning to think Australia Post wasn't sure where Romania was But I do have some reservations about "That is to say that, as we speak, Marmite Rules! for this Romanian alien. " Wasn't the bribe in the packet too???

Sue - I would have voted but I forgot where

Copago - The bribe was in there, but I didn't test that one yet. Ate too much Marmite and Vegemite so there's no free space for bribe too.
And I am planning on trying a next round soon: buttered toast, thick spread and garlic (I basically live on garlic - sweets are the only thing I don't use it with)

Trojan - I've already admited in this topic, somewhere in the first pages, that I loved Marmite when I first tasted it 2 years ago. But maybe I should add that my Mum and my best friend (who was visiting this evening) both 'voted' for Marmite too. Poor girls, I made them taste both!

Sue: I have arranged for Marmite soldiers to remove a certain offending item from the Supermarket. Thankfully, it's not too warm at the moment, else I fear that they might melt before achieving their objective.

Denni19: How absolutely splendid that your dear Mother and your best friend share your taste. It may very well be that, in view of your superb culinary excellence, you are invited by the Commons to become Queen of England and promote a new Marmite dynasty.
Ahh....alas, I hear a hammering upon my door. I fear that Ned 'vegemite' Kelly wishes, in fact, demands entry in order to propound the health giving joys of his concoction of dust & sand extract. Why, even through his metal helmet I can see those little green shoots sprouting out. I shall offer him some Marmite.

Oh, no! Never that for me, Trojan!
Even though I DO share the same astrological signs (Western and Chinese) with HM The Queen, I'll never fit into any 'royal' circumstances. But thanks for the thought .

Well, my football team lost by 2 points. So unfortunately, the evil husband will not be forced to swallow an entire tube of Vegemite. Talk about wiping the smile off my face....

On the other hand, he is professing that my bet was picking up the 22 pumpkins, 3 bales of straw, and 20 odd chrysanthemum pots I decorated the yard for fall with and putting up Christmas decorations in the yard. This is supposed to be done by a woman that can't even stand and do dishes yet. I know I didn't make that bet!

I must remind myself to add a lot of benefiber to his next meal as retaliation for his fibs...hee hee hee!!!

Ok Sue et all.

We all took the Vegemite/Marmite challenge.

The results are in:
3 for Vegemite (sorry Sue)
2 for Marmite

It came down to that my husband preferred the Marmite because although it was too salty for the 3 of us, he thought it had much better flavor because of the saltiness. My daughter commented that we Americans are so used to being preached at about low salt all of the time, that we all tend to eat lower salt diets. But to compensate, we eat waaaay too much sugar. She thought the Marmite tasted like concentrated soy sauce, however she has been watching her salt intake really closely as she is 7 months pregnant!

The fifth taste tester was our English Bull Terrier, Bruno (hence my screen name) He was allowed a finger of each at the same time and he finished the Marmite first. So he is a true Englishman at heart.

This was a really fun post and I learned a lot. Thanks for the Marmite Sue. I am searching for sugar free jelly bellies for you to return the favor.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well congratulations Sue; You might just get your wish after all... For Marmite to win the war!

Looks like sending out all those love-heart shaped Marmite samples did the trick!

Sue probably did the unthinkable and mixed a little Vegemite in with the Marmite samples she sent. Has anyone tried to mix the two together, like a cross between the Marmite monster and the happy little Vegemite?

Maybe it a bit unfair, as i think there was more Vegemite than Marmite; but that is the saltiest thing i have ever tasted in my life. It was actually quite hard to digest!

Still, it did have a very 'pleasant' taste to it, once i got to the part where there was an equal amount of both!

Don't try it at home

It has very little salt in it, 0.2g in 4.0g.

Obvioulsey it's just the taste then.

Vegemite has 0.2 g in every 5g serving. Still that was by far the funniest thing i have ever tasted!
