Hi all, I don't know how widespread this is -- I'm not sure of the distribution of the Smith's Falls Hershey plant -- but if you live in or around Smith's Falls, Ontario, Canada please read this and be advised! Hershey's is recalling many of it's popular candy products that were made between October 15th and November 10th this year. These products are very likely to be contaminated with Salmonella. From the Kingston Whig-Standard: Quote:
The largest employer in Smiths Falls has been idled after a salmonella scare at the Hershey factory.
A number of Hershey chocolate products, including some of the company's best-sellers, have been recalled and the production line shut down after internal testing revealed the presence of the bacteria in the product.
There have been no reported illnesses among people who have eaten the affected chocolate, which includes chocolate chips, Oh Henry! bars, Reese Peanut Butter Cups, and Glosettes, a Hershey spokeswoman told the Whig yesterday from corporate headquarters in Pennsylvania. None of the recalled products was produced for Halloween or Christmas products and Stephanie Moritz said the company notified the Canadian Food Inspection Agency when it discovered the contamination. Hershey is working closely with the federal agency, she said.
She said the contamination appears to have come from an ingredient from an outside supplier and did not originate from the plant itself. The plant was shut down Friday when the salmonella was discovered.
"It was an externally sourced ingredient, and it was an extremely minor ingredient in the manufacture of chocolate," she said yesterday.
The food inspection agency said that most of the affected product, manufactured between Oct. 15 and Nov. 10, had not yet been delivered to stores.
"The majority of the product is still in their distribution system, in their warehouses and at their facility, there has been a limited amount of product that has been released," said Garfield Balsom, a CFIA spokesman.
Moritz said while the contamination is being investigated, the factory has been shut and the production lines cleaned and sterilized.
She was not sure when the factory might begin production again.
"Our goal is to reopen as soon as possible," she said.
The recalled chocolate and candy can be identified by date codes found on the back of each package. The affected date codes range from 6417 to 6455.
The plant employs more than 620 people and draws thousands of visitors to the town, which calls itself Chocolatetown Canada, for tours of the factory.
The plant opened in June 1963 and produces 45,000 kilograms of chocolate a year.
Consumers who have purchased the items in question can contact Hershey at 1-800-468-1714.

Oh dear. Cadbury's in the UK had that not long ago too.
On the bright side, after the products were recalled and production of uncontaminated produced resumed, Cadbury's had special promotions with their chocolate at a bargain price to encourage people to buy once more!

That's too bad for Hershey's but I don't like their chocolate anyway. I find American chocolate to be waxy. I know I'll hear it from the Americans but it's a personal thing. English or European chocolate is the best.

I have very limited knowledge of American chocolate, from what I remember it wasn't the same as what I am used to eating.
I love English chocolate of course but also Belgium and Swiss chocolates are excellent, of the last two, I prefer Belgium chocolates - yummy.

THank goodness the supplies provided for Halloween were probably on the shelves long before that date!

What a waste of all that good chocolate! Sob!
I have found chocolate in every country tastes different - even the same brands. But I love Hershey Kisses!

Couldn't they just repackage the chocolate and sell it as laxatives? Just my two cents. I know that it would not work but I thought it was a rather funny idea.

I'd agree that American chocolate isn't the best. Unfortunately for we Americans, when it's 11:00 at night and you really need a chocolate bar (do not try to convince me this has never happened to you) sometimes Hershey's is the best you can get. If I had my druthers, I'd be eating German chocolate. I admit to a huge soft spot for Milka chocolate bars and Storck's Merci chocolates. Of course, while in Germany, I also got to sample many lovely things made by Ferrero, including Kinder Surprise, which are delightful, and Nutella...mmm...

I can't stand hazelnuts as they just don't taste fresh to me. Even when I lived in Europe, I wasn't tempted by anything with 'noisette' in it. That might be filberts if memory serves me well.
We can get everything here in this area...as they are very cosmopolitan. I haven't seen Kinder surprise, but used to collect the toys with the kids. It always seemed ironic that they put toys or an incentive for a kid to eat chocolate in it, or even yoghurt! But those toys were cute!
Hershey's kisses are good if they're fresh and not from the last season's leftovers.

I agree that American chocolate isn't always the best but there are degrees of quality - which is to say that not all chocolate here tastes the same. I don't mind Hershey's but I'll pass on a Nestle's Crunch bar even in times of desperation. Much to waxy and no flavor. Yech!
