Do you Brits actually celebrate this day still? I know historically it used to be a night of fireworks / bonfires celebrating the failure of some ancient guy's attempt to blow up something or other.

Just wondering if it's still a big event in the UK.

Oh yes, Terry , they do, much to the disgust of most animal lovers!. However, it would seem that the trend is away from firework parties at home in your own back yard, and much more towards large, organised displays. I have not lived there for many years but I think most Brits will bear me out here.

The ancient guy was Guy Fawkes, and he tried to blow up Parliament to further the cause of a Catholic restoration to the throne in 1605.

I heard on the news a few days ago that the Suffolk Police were considering a policy of education for the US service personnel at Lakenheath because they had over 300 phone calls asking what all the explosions were about.

Guy Fawkes Night was always huge when i was younger. Most of our town would turn up on this acre of land and help stack up twigs and other flammable items, whilst the handy women would make the Guy! Don't know what it's like now though
