All I can say is that listening to Cricket on the radio, can send you asleep when you don't think you can!
I agree, it is rather difficult to enjoy sport on the radio. Tennis, cricket, motor racing etc, don't really seem to have any fun feel via the medium of radio. It is really a purely vocal medium reliant upon a constant flow of words. Even major battles would have come across as pretty boring, I should think. John Arlott/Richie Beneut (spelling?), for instance, commentating on the Battle of Trafalger:
(silence and then 'POP')) Arlott: "And there's a fine forty five pounder from Nelson smak amidships of the French Frigate". (Silence): 'POP'. Arlott: "Well, that was a slow delivery and way off the mark from the Frenchman." (long silence, they're reloading, you see) then, 'POP-POP-POP'. Arlott: "Oh my goodness what a fine delivery. You could really hear that one hit the wood. Yes - the Frenchman's gone this time. Game over I think. What a player this Nelson is. What d'you think Ritchie?" Ritchie.B: "Well I dunno Bruce." Arlott: John - the names John." Ritchie.B: Yeh, sorry -Well I dunno Bruce. This new left leewarder looks pretty handy." (silence) 'POP' (long silence) Arlott: "Oh dear, that's the captain gone. What a fine player Nelson was tho'. Time for tea Ritchie?" Ritchie.B: "Too right Bruce and I must say mate that Nelson played a blinder."

Thank you Engadine. I believe that he's retired now. Shame, I always enjoyed his commentaries.

See, I love listening to cricket on the radio and have been known to plan trips around when cricket will be on so I can drive and listen. Sad, really.
Richie isn't fully retired, he does still do some stints at the microphone but no where near his earlier capacity.
Third test in Perth and just where have this England team been hiding? They're brilliant! 3/69 at lunch and the celebrations are just great ... Harmy's LBW against Ponting, the ovation for Monty when he (finally) gets a bowl and the sheer excitement of the bloke when he gets his first wicket was just great. Could have told him he'd won the lottery and he wouldn't be that happy! The Poms aren't going to give that urn back without a fight!

Panesar now has three.. I wonder what the selectors were thinking during the first two Tests.
A great close-in catch by Bell, and plaudits to Gilchrist for 'walking'- an all-too-rare sight these days.
Australia is 6/178. Hussey has to be there at stumps!

Well, I've got my shopping out of the way, and just switched on the radio to hear McGrath getting caught. Hussey was still there at the other end, I think, but he didn't quite make it till stumps. Monty Panesar seems to have had a good outing for his down-under début.
Now, do I have any confidence that England won't chuck it all away? Well, ......

The McGrath dismissal was a bit iffy, but I do not think it will make a lot of difference. The ball seemed to hit him on the shoulder, and not the bat or gloves. My only concern is that it damaged his shoulder, NOT his batting average. The English run chase has started.. 0/16, in reply to 244.

Australia 'out'. Now, I 'spose it is a question of whether or not England come up to the mark or fluff it.

Shaping to be an interesting Test, eh? England had the chance to build a lead but except for Pietersen, none of the batsmen applied themselves. Think the English batsmen will apply themselves if they have to chase 300 or so in the fourth innings? More likely chances are that Ponting may blaze another hundred and bat England out of the Test and Series Fascinating... very fascinating Test. Meanwhile watch out for the SA-India Test starting today. The Wanderers present India's only chance to salvage a Test in this series

Well, we "believed " pretty well when we won the Ashes over here in 2005.
This is how I see it.
Australia are a strong team - batting/bowling/fielding/mentally tough and playing in their own patch and on wickets they know. They also want to win back the Ashes, desperately.
England have improved steadily year after year and surprised everyone, including themselves, by beating Australia 2-1 in 2005. To be fair, that series could have ended 3-1 to the Aussies, it was that close.
The difference between the teams is that Australia have, amongst their team , a lot of players who are capable of producing something special. I mean, Mike Hussey averages 80 in 1st class cricket. I'm not saying we haven't got good players. But, at the moment, the Aussies are on a roll and are deservedly ahead.
I don't think the gulf is as wide as some are making out and I also think we have a better set of younger players coming through. Australia's team is , let us call them "experienced".
At least England are making you work a bit harder for the win's now.

Yes, good on the Poms for making a go of it, giving us some competition

When you think of the injuries that England have had to deal with since the last Ashes series you can see the effect it's had on the team. I wonder what this would have been like had Vaughn been fit ... and Trescothick for that matter. The Poms have shown burst of brilliance but I reckon at the moment it's consistancy that it the problem. And it's good to see Harmison get a bit of form back. Warne annoys me more than I can tell you - all that bloody appealing. If I were the umpire I'd be saying no just for badness. In my best Gilchrist voice " Shut up already, Shaaaaaaane. " With the couple quick wickets just before stumps it made the idea of England batting through the last day seem a bit more difficult. Perhaps Flintoff can find his own form today and hang around with Pieterson. It's been cricket heaven here lately. With the NZ/SL Test, AUS/ENG test and SA/IND you can watch live test matches from 8:30am until 3am ... and throw in the WI/PAK ODI on Friday night it was almost an overload.

Right Copago... So if start talking about random Cricket things in other threads; we'll know why!
This comment is not just aimed at Cricket, but other sports as well. When a team is winning, praise is given to the team and everyone connected with it, yet the second they begin to lose, fingers start getting pointed - At the captain, the coach, the selectors. At some point in time there may be unwise and considerably stupid decisions made by who plays and who doesn't, but the selectors obviously had some ground behind their decisions.

And the Ashes go back to Australia .. well the title does, tha actual Ashes will be placed firmly back at Lords. I'm sure we'll be hearing how unfair that is over the coming days ...
Had to feel sorry for Panesear and Pieterson being the ones out there at the last wicket. Probably the two that least deserved that.
Fair call, Nic. So wise for one so young!

All of 15 days to get back the Ashes...The Australians probably deserved this one as they were more "desperate" to win... The gap certainly is narrowing between the teams, but Australia will stay ahead of the rest of the pack because they are "phasing" the new players in. You will not see Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath, Langer and Hayden all retire in one shot. Guess I am more than thrilled at India's showing too....We had written them off, and given them no chance at all in the Test series (me too ) and they are set to win the First Test! I just hope they pull off their first ever Test win in South Africa today

Mmm, Aussie Aussie Aussie . . . didn't think for a mo' we'd lose, but, now that Australia has achieved the swiftest (in a tie as noted by Nic )Ashes turnaround in history will it also become a record-equalling 5-0 crushing of England? When Shane Warne bowled Monty Panesar it was the legspinner's 699th Test wicket (and yes Copago, I too can hear Gilly telling Warney to "... give it a rest Shaaaane ..." and England were all out for 350! So, is there much interest in the 'dead rubbers?' A 'newspoll' on ninemsn is querying whether the Ashes Urn should stay in the winning country, it's a resounding YES (90% of the vote) at this point in time, but I don't think that the Poms are want to let go of the 'Urn', the buggers'll never give it up (even tho' it is NOT legitimately theirs, anymore)! C'mon Aussie C'mon, C'mon, C'mon Aussie C'mon!

Warne and McGrath too ....boy oh boy...I always thought the seniors would phase themselves out of this Australian team...Martyn first, now Warne and McGrath with Gilchrist, Hayden and Langer in the not too far future... Cricket will be exciting all over again, but the edge's still with Australia...they have a whole line up of real class players waiting in the wings and will continue to be ahead of the rest of the world...players like Hussey and Stuart Clarke had to wait till they were 30 before they could make it to the team and people like Brad Hodge, Phil Jacques, Nathan Bracken and all would just walk into most international teams! I really envy you Australians, I say....

OKay. It's done. His last game will be the Sydney test. And he's taken up a commentary position at channel nine. Now they'll have to hire Gilchrist too .. for the background noise ... "nice comment, Shaaaaaaane"
I promise I will always switch the noise off when he's commentating - I would end up throwing things at the screen.
It's expected that McGrath will announce his next but may take his retirement at the end of the world cup.
