Srini, don't be fooled. Australia will be in a lot of trouble in Test cricket after the Ashes series is over. It may seem that the depth is there, but there is just no way you can replace someone like Shane Warne overnight. No doubt MacGill will be used as the short-term replacement, but he's already 35yo, he can't sustain pressure like Warne can, and he also can't bat or catch. It also means that Ponting will have to think about tactics, rather than just putting Warne on at one end and hoping things will happen. McGrath has always been either the 'go-to' bowler for both Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting. Lee is looked at as the spearhead, but he just hasn't measured up in that department. The only saving grace for Australia is that the standard of world cricket isn't great at the moment, so the blow will be softened to an extent.

THis is depressing. How silly is it that you can watch Ashes cricket through the day and then switch over to IND/SA at night and THAT is the game you're looking forward to watching? I almost feel ripped off.

I just hope they don't bring in McGill. I don't have a problem with him (well that's a change!) but I just think they should be bringing in the new blood instead of the over 30 brigade. Who would you bring in Symonds who isn't going to last much longer anyway when there's all these younger blokes needing a start. The press was right when they called the Aust team 'Dad's Army' ... they're just an excellent Dad's army.

Guess I am more than thrilled at India's showing too....We had written them off, and given them no chance at all in the Test series (me too ) and they are set to win the First Test! I just hope they pull off their first ever Test win in South Africa today
In the long run, all things will return to the natural state of equilibrium (which is what happened to us(India) in the second test)
But then again, atleast we won a test in SA

Not a bad start to England's first innings at the SCG. 4/234 with a delayed start and bad light finishing the day early. Think a lot of people held their breaths when Pieterson and Bell got out close to each other but Flintoff and Collingwood are going great. Flintoff is showing more confidnece in this innings than any other so far. Thx Glenn and Thx Shane in the 3 advertising on either end of the ground ... and the afterthought of Thx Justin at midwicket. He wouldn't have got anything had neither of the others been retiring India/South Africa start their third and final test today with India batting first.

Hi Engadine. You really should read previous posts : I believe that, given all the retiring Aussies and the state of the English team, Ashes reports for the last test will be coming from the ECG! And an ECG is an Electrocardiogram. The Poms need one to make sure they have.... I'd better not say that.

And due to Australia not playing another Test until November, anyone want to put bets on this being Gilchrist's last Test too? I firmly believe that Hayden will go on for another couple of years, but I think the World Cup might see Gilly out as well, especially if they win.

Hayden might go along the same route as Gilchrist, if they win the World Cup? Maybe?
I tend to think there is a bit of pressure on those two to hang around a bit longer with the four senior players being lost this summer.

Jaffer scores the first century for 2007 and India's off to a good start in the 3rd Test...can we pull off a miracle? Highly unlikely, but stranger things have happened in cricket Don't think Gilchrist and Hayden will retire now...they will play one more season (rather, made to play)...Australia's next Test will be against India and the last time they played India without McGrath, they almost lost the series (Waugh's last series)...and now they will be without Warne, McGrath, Langer, Martyn ....very, very interesting series in the offing, eh?

Dear Copago,
Your wish is granted.
God
This game is a little bit closer than what we are used to- hopefully it can last at least four days!

Ozzz, I always wondered why you do so badly in the tipping competitions. You were just trying not to give yourself away, weren't you?
I can't believe that at one stage today I told my wife that I thought England might win this. If they were able to get 250 in front Australia might have struggled on the last day.
It's not going to happen.
