I am thinking about James Watt who is given credit for inventing the steam engine or the almost forgotten Thomas Young.

How about Michael Faraday? A founding figure in organic chemisty, the inventor of the electric motor and generator for all practical purposes, and one of the most influential theoretical physicists of his time. I would estimate that fewer than 2% of Americans have any idea who he was - perhaps things are better elsewhere.
