I don't know if this is something that is more American, but there are things here called "Cons" (short for convention) and the best known, of course, are Sci-fi cons, where the actors from Star Trek keep their careers going. But there are other types of cons, including Comic cons, that center around comic books, graphic novels, and more recently, online comic strips as well. (I promise this has a point.) Anyway, a lot of the same people attend comic cons, sci-fi cons, fantasy cons, gaming cons, etc., and geeky Americans LOVE kilts. (Heck, my group of friends, many or most of whom have Scottish and Irish heritage, have a Scottish party every year, where we all wear "garb" including men in kilts, and even have some Scottish games.) There's a gag going around the comic cons over the last year or so where people bring leaf-blowers to test whether guys really know how to wear a kilt.

Edited to add: A testiment to American geeks:
http://devilspanties.keenspot.com/kilts.htmlAs you can see, the Utilikilt is very popular with American geeks, and given how difficult it is to, erm, blow, one might understand why. Also, as you can see, some people are VERY geeky, or cheeky, or both...
