Being new to the site, i figured i would out myself early and face the impending ridicule immediately. I am two quarters away from graduating with a BA in accounting (with honors) from the Fisher College of Business at thee Ohio State University. I don't believe i am an ignorant person. But i LOVE professional wrestling. I mean i plan my monday nights around being able to watch the WWE. So are there any other intelligent wrestling fans or am i the only one? Ive been to live events and exposed myself to the typical wrestling fan and believe me i know why the stigma exists. So i was just curious if there are any others out there, or am i all alone in this world.

Mate, I'm more likely to ridicule you for becoming an accountant than being a fan of professional wrestling ...

Surely one needs to be an accountant in order to be able to count the number of bodies in a WWE ring at any one time.

Oh I don't know Meanwolf, just think of all the folk that watch Soccer - truly sad. At least being a minority you can always count on a sympathy vote and throw accusative isms.

All is not lost! There is at least one fan of it that visits the boards and she's written many quizzes about it but she might not visit the sport forums all that much.

Hi Meanwolf,

I am a very big pro wrestling fan. I've come across the ones that you've talked about; the ones that the stigma is aimed at. People ridicule you for liking pro wrestling. So, believe me, I know where you're coming from.

So what do you want to talk about?

Best Actor Awards?

Sorry, I am another that cannot really take wrestling seriously.

But is it meant to be taken seriously?

I cringe a bit when it is called a sport but as far as an entertaining past-time it's all good.

Mmmm, I love oxymorons, so welcome Meanwolf to the wonderful world of Trivia, unfortunately there's no accounting for some people when it comes to wrestling with the thought of 'grown' men, prancing around in 'tights' in the name of sport, however, each to his own . . . I know my Grandmother (when she was alive) loved the wrestling . . .

ha ha, I heard that

12 noon Saturday lunchtime, Channel 9 -- gimme Mario Milano, Spiro Arion, Brute Bernard, Dominic Denucci, Killer Karl Cox, King Curtis, Andre The Giant, Killer Kowalski, The Skull *scratches his head to remember others* .. was there a Ray Miller or Ray Steven around as well?

Anyway, forget the rest; that was wrestling, and they were wrestlers

well i posted a longer reply that didnt post...so here's a quick second try. Copago, thank you for making the most important point in that its not supposed to be taken seriously. So many focus on its not real, but neither are a majority of the television shows or movies that people enjoy. It doesnt pretend to be real anymore, they came out of the closet many years ago. Gtho4, i dont know most of those names, but i too enjoy the "old school" guys who actually 'wrassle rather than putting on a spotfest. And Engadine, who doesnt love a bunch of oversized men all oiled up in funny little tights following a script by pretend fighting using real moves that are pre-determined for the enjoyment of the masses ( i cant believe i just asked who doesnt love oily men in tights)? Thanks to all for welcoming me in and accepting me even for my oddities

Yep, they were the ones my Nanna loved too . . . when wrestlers were wrestlers and the tights weren't quite so tight . . . maybe that's what it is . . . they've made them so tight their brains are starved for oxygen . . .

Men in tights, oiled bodies, primped hair-do's, store bought teeth, love being slapped (but not too hard): sounds like a good game. Is it really legal?

I have always been a Pro Wrestling fan. I used to watch the division championships in Shreveport, LA before WWE came on the scene, before cable access polluted the system, and before Vince McMahon forever changed the sport as we now know it. I have watched nearly every single Monday Night episode since it's conception on cable TV.

I agree that men watching other men grabbing men in sweat filled tights is a bit awkward but then I would have to say that that is somewhat way off point. If that is the only thing you notice, then you have some serious problems that need to be dealt with.

My favorite wrestler will always be the Junkyard Dog AKA Sylvester Ritter (R.I.P.).

And if nothing else, wrestling is a valid excuse to have your friends over and drink beer.

By the way, I have an I.Q. of 149. However, I must admit that during the broadcast I tend to act the part of the stereotypical red neck alcoholic buffoon. And if you don't like that, then I got two words for you... Wanna rassle?

Personally I'll drink to anything .
And it's true, there's nothing at all wrong with watching WWE. Each to their own. And it is, after all, the only 'sport' where it is quite legal to hit people over the head with tin trays .

Don't forget the tables, ladders, barbed wire wrapped bats, trash cans, sledge hammers and steel chairs.

Regardless of whether it's soccer, hockey, football or wrestling, watching somebody get hurt just brings enjoyment to millions of people somehow.

That is very true. Boxing, full contact sport etc. Worthy successors to the Roman Arena and infinitely better than the old public spectacle of 'hanging drawing and quartering' etc.
Winning, losing, the transference of hope and dreams, is a potent selling force. I remember many years ago now watching Alan Minter, (a local lad here, he lived just up the road) lose his World Middleweight Title to Marvin Hagler. He was cut badly and the fight was stopped. What ensued was the worst thing that I have witnessed in a sports arena. A nationalistic outpouring of grief and violence of the worst kind. I felt physically sick and more ashamed than at any time in my life. Hagler and his handlers feared (with good reason) for their lives. Minter was stunned by the hope that he had engendered in so many people and never quite got over it.
So, I 'spose that the Goody v the Baddie with an inevitable and controlled outcome is, really a rather good idea.
But don't you think that - those slinky tights have just gotta go?
