There's already a thread for terrible movies, but what about the films that are so unabashedly bad that they're great fun to see again and again, preferably with a bunch of sarcastic friends on a lazy afternoon?

The best I've ever seen is "Sinbad of the Seven Seas", starring Lou Ferrigno (the Incredible Hulk) as Sinbad. Didn't go longer than two or three minutes without laughing out loud, all the way from the young child inexplicably voiced by an adult; to the piranhas represented by long, serpentine sock puppets; to the guy who played the wicked Jaffar, who belongs to the "I'll look evil only if I bulge out my eyes, never blink, and make random, grandiose gestures" school of acting; to the innumerable fight scenes where Sinbad's tactical strategy is to draw his sword and immediately throw it away. What a great movie. Unbelievably bad.

If you want a good laugh, check out Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space." It's an old, old (attempt at) sci-fi. Aliens, zombies, vampires, et al. It's a cult classic, it's so bad. It was to be Bela Lugosi's final appearance - he died as the filming was beginning and the producer drafted his own wife's chiropractor as a fill-in for some cloak-over-the-face scenes. Also featured the most famous lady vampire/zombie, Vampira.

Low-budget FX in those days was string, cardboard and some creative paint schemes (although this one's in B&W), all of which are obvious.

A real hoot.

Another great groaner is "Amazon Women On The Moon." Nothing to do with either Amazon women or the Moon, but a series of comic scenarios. If you don't wet your pants over the Arsenio Hall skit with the VCR, you're not paying attention.

I've got the same with Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers". The movie is sooo lame you can't help but laugh out loud. I have a feeling you're not supposed to laugh, but it should be an action movie. You should see this, really.

The image of the "CNN like" reporter being slayed by a giant bug is just great humour

Wimm,

I hope I'm not mistaken here, but I was under the impression that the movie "Starship Troopers" was purposefully meant to be campy. I don't think they did the best job with the intentional camp, it hasn't exactly become a cult classic, nonetheless...it sure seems as if they were aiming in that direction.

I personally like the films of Yahoo Serious. They are definately created in the camp tradition. "Young Einstein" is fun, but I am really fond of his second film "Reckless Kelly". He is satirical of both American and Australian culture in that one. Lots of fun if you overlook the cheesy nature of the film!

I know The Rocky Horror Picture Show is supposed to fall under this category, but I've never found it funny.

My two favourites that are "so bad they're funny" are both supposed to be... spoof movies, that is: Spaceballs and Top Secret!.

I always love watching Mystery Science Theater 3000. Where do they find all those horrible movies? The comments made by Mike, Tom, and Crow always make me laugh so hard I go into an asthma attack. One of our family traditions is to watch a movie once, and then rewind it and watch it all over again and make fun of it.

(BTW jazz have you seen Yahoo's newest movie, Mr. Acident? I keep meaning to rent it but it's always out.)

How about The Gods Must be Crazy. When that one came out there was a theatre in Vancouver that ran that one for a full year to on the most part capacity crowds. But it looks real bad but it's sooooo funny. The sequel wasn't bad either.

Molly,

I have seen Mr. Accident and I must admit I was quite disappointed. He seems to have lost his way a bit in that film, not sure why. I realize that this is an inane comparison, but heck, this is an inane thread, so...I compare this "Mr. Accident" with Pee Wee Herman's second film "Big Top Pee Wee". The first film, "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" was excellently produced camp by Paul Reubens and Tim Burton. Camp must be contrived and I think it's very difficult to accomplish...the first film was well done in this regard. The second Pee Wee film was truly awful, I think Pee Wee started taking himself seriously. Maybe that was Yahoo Serious's problem in "Mr. Accident". He needs to get back to his wacky hijinks of the first two films.

Good lord, I'm intellectualizing Pee Wee and Yahoo Serious...someone put me out of my misery!

Whenever I think of horribly cheesy movies, theyre always horror movies. Personally, I think all of the plots are stupid, but some are good to just laugh at how ignorant the characters are and the $2 "special" effects. But the worst movie for me has to be Dawn of the Dead. Well, anything with zombies in it denotes tacky. I just laugh at the people trying to act like they're really scared. Bad plot plus bad acting with a dash of bad special effects and costumes equal a good chuckle.

Why were you disappointed, jazz? You should've known it was going to be an "accident" to rent even a new movie with that disgrace to acting.

(that's just my opinion)

Hmm...I guess the zany antics of one such as Yahoo Serious couldn't carry on forever with such amusing effect, a la Senor Reubens. I take it you were not amused by the prior to entries by Mr. Serious (namely "Young Einstein" and "Reckless Kelly"), eh Wiz?
