Following on from the thread about"Who would want that job?",what job would you LIKE? I see myself as the lady who checks that the flowers look ok in the restaurant. My friend's husband was a restaurant manager , they had a flat on the premises, and that was her job. Their flat had NO kitchen, as they could order what they wanted, the waiter brought it up to the flat and they left the tray of washing up outside the door. The washing was done in the laundry at the hotel . She just didn't HAVE a kitchen! School Principals seem to have the Life of Riley... I would really like to drive a Zamboni at the ice rink. How satisfying... What about you?

I had my perfect job. Talking to people, asking them personal questions and then telling them what to do. Great.

Excuse me? You could still be where in the afternoons if you were a teacher?? I do not know of any teacher who is home before 8 at night, more usually 9. I am sorry but I get annoyed with people who suppose that the teacher's day is over when the home bell rings!

Hear, hear! I chose to bow out of the regular classroom and take the route of substitute teaching so that I didn't have the same amount of planning and marking and parent interviews and extra curriculars and report cards and meetings and professional development courses and IEPs for kids with certain needs and evening craft nights and meet the teacher nights and etc etc etc. The pay was considerably less and there were no benefits, but at least I got to see my kids when they were growing up.
I am a writer, and my ideal job would be to finally get paid for it!

I have a degree in biology and a passion for animals, so I really wanted to be a zoo keeper when I was younger. However, it wasn't possible to do so in Perth at that time, and I didn't really want to move interstate and leave my family and friends. While I was studying at university, I was going out with a reptile keeper at the Perth Zoo and he advised me I would never get a job there while the (then) current director was running the place as he was a real misogynist. Apparently his excuse for not hiring female keepers was the lack of bathroom facilities for female staff and lack of funds to build them. There was no indication that the status quo would change any time in the near future. Of course, that was decades ago and things are different now. So, since I wanted to work with animals, I did the next best thing and became a high school teacher - just kidding ! Seriously though, I agree that people who think we only work school hours are sadly mistaken. When school was in session, I regularly worked 7.30 to 4.30 at the school (school hours were 8.30 to 3.30) and then went home and spent my nights and weekends preparing lessons, marking students' work, running errands for the school and being involved in extra-curricular activities.

I would dearly love to be a freelance sports commentator and get paid to travel around the worls following the cricket, tennis, golf and anything else that took my fancy.
Imagine struggling with the effort of covering the Australia vs West Indies test match in Barbados, tossing back strawberries and cream at Wimbledon or checking out the flowers and landscaping in Augusta in spring. Hmmm.

I have a (typically) weird response on this one again . For some reason I have always wanted to work in a bowling alley!? I love the noises in those places, I have never seen such unrehearsed and brutally honest human behavior in motion as a general rule in any other venue and one can do their job with minimal stress and do it while wearing whatever felt comfortable. Clearly one wouldn't get rich in such a profession but it'd be fascinating just to sit back and observe and jot it all down. I could live without the handling of the used footwear of strangers, though, I think ...

Forgiven Lynann, no offence taken, and welcome BTW! Quote:

I like it! What time do they start?

The first 6 years of my life, I was dreaming to become a hairdresser (and exercised a lot on my dolls) . But without counting that short period, for me there can be only one, loud and clear answer to the 'Dream-job' question - Teacher.

I'd like to be the Governor General of Canada. Nice house, parties all the time and people treating you like Royalty. You get to meet interesting people and travel as a Head of State. It would also up my chances of actually meeting the Queen.

Jane, I did that for many years. It was indeed wonderful. However, you spend most of the time just trying to justify your existence. No-one ever understands just how hard library staff work, all the grumps they have to deal with, and most importantly, the daily struggle for existence in a bean-counter world where it is difficult to quantify the social importance of the local library. "They" are always trying to cut staff, cut budgets, cut hours and generally make life miserable for their hardest-working staff. Our lot have just closed a library (much frequented by the elderly) and are about to decimate several of the others, in a bid to force them to use the brand new, whizz-bang library in the Town Centre. Can't park, tiny children's section, few large print books, fewer bus services, smaller bookstock, but lots of TV screens and X-Boxes. I can just see all the displaced patrons using it - I don't think!
Now I'm a teacher, and still struggling with many of the same issues, especially the perception.
I have always thought I would like to sell real estate. I'm good at matching people and things. However, since one of my pet peeves is the number of tiny appartments springing up (can't have pets or hobbies or noise,) I don't think I could, unless I just sold houses!

I once saw this documentary on TV where this one guy who worked for a State Wildlife and Fisheries Department got paid good money to go around fishing all day, tagging certain fish and recording information and of course more fishing. He said that he was not going to lie, that he really loved his job and I know I would too.
So, what do you call that job title? Professional Fisherman? Sounds good to me.

The stacks of "rubbish" that people leave out the front of their houses on clean-up days are impossible for me to drive past without having a look at, I did rubbish removal as work (not household rubbish that goes in rubbish bins) and loved it. I collect ancient coins and other old items. When I was fencing it was always a thrill for me to dig up old bottles and other buried items and sometimes have to think what they were and what they were used for.
I loved/love doing all the above because deep down I have always wanted to be an archaeologist.

If you want to be home with your kids in the afternoons, drive the school bus - I know several moms who did that back when I was in school.

My ideal job would be a forensic scientist and work in a crime lab with crime scene investigators. (I watch too much TV). Imagine doing something new everyday!

Radio DJ. Listening to music, announcing the time/traffice/weather every so often would suit me fine.

I love my job, I am a GP's receptionist and mainly work with the medication side, I find it fascinating and love working with our doctors they are a scream! I love the patients too, the words they use for medical terminology is hilarious. If I had the choice though, I'd like David Attenboroughs job!!

We don't have school buses here. We drive our own kids to school. Nice thought though.
