Not that you wanted to know but...

The phrase ‘painting the town red” originated in Melton when some young aristocrats up for the hunt went on a drunken spree in the 1800s and literally painted Melton town centre red.

I was looking up Melton Mowbray in Google as it is the home of the best pork pies.

I disagree. I find the meat pies in Natchitoches, LA to be far superior to any other. I've tried the ones from Canada and Australia as well as several local varieties but I shall forever drool for my Natchitoches Meat Pies.

Did you try a pie from Yatala in Australia ablesentinel?
They are the best in Queensland.

Actually, while the Yatala pies are very good, the best ones that I've experienced aren't commercially available.
There is a takeaway shop in Ipswich called "Fatseas", which, as a service, makes pies for charity pie drives etc. They don't sell them over the counter, but if they did, they would be a multi-national chain. These pies are absolutely out of this world!

As for chicken pies, which are somewhat different from ordinary meat pies, I've never found one to beat Frohwein's kosher ones my mum bought for years. They only have the one shop in Temple Fortune near me (opened in 1936) and a factory nearby, but you don't have to be Jewish to buy one!

No, I can't say I have. I followed a traditional recipe but I don't think it was representative of any particular region/town.

satguru is Jewish, eh? Glad to meet you. I should have known from the Star of David. Occasionally I might have a 'Jewish' question if you wouldn't mind me looking you up. I'm sorry you can't enjoy a good meat pie but I know chicken pot pies can be just as good if not better. I have never heard of a place that sells them like that. It must be good! Personally, this whole thread is starting to make my mouth water.

Frohweins have the best puff pastry, white sauce and plenty of chicken. I've had many other makes and none come close.
Any Jewish questions feel free to ask, I'm not religious and we do have an expert on the religion chat board which already has a Jewish enquiry thread set up, but I'm pretty familiar with all the other aspects.
