Freezing fog is causing huge disruption at British airports with many flights suffering long delays or being cancelled altogether. It's mainly domestic flights which are being camcelled, as reasonably passengers can take alternatives such as rail or bus. The cancellations being to lower the pressure on airport ground staff, flight controllers, etc, and obviously minimise the risk to aircraft in flight.
One enterprising railway company, GNER, has taken out a full page newspaper advert which states "Why Fly, We Haven't The Foggiest"! Not bad advice for short haul travellers.

I agree, except that there is a little matter of the English Channel between Jersey and England so some people have little option other than to fly. Yes, there are boats but when you have just landed at Heathrow after a fourteen hour flight the last thing you want to do is to try to find out about ferries and trains to catch the ferry.

It is easy to get from London to Manchester or even to Scotland, but not so easy for us.

Poor Ren33, she is at Hong Kong airport at this moment in time with her fingers, eyes and just about everything else crossed.

The airlines aren't being awkward, but simply obeying the rules. UK Aviation Regulations stipulate that in fog conditions, aircraft must be 6 miles apart, whereas in fine weather they need only be 3 miles apart. Even with a 6 mile gap, aircraft are landing at London Heathrow about 2.5 - 3 minutes.
The increased separation distance is because of slower taxi times for landed aircraft, which could cause landing beacon signals to be blocked longer, and of course the greater difficulty of parking in restricted visibility.
Inconvenient as it may be for short haul passengers, the airlines are behaving responsibly in mainly cancelling flights where alternative transport is available.

I quite agree. I think the Jersey flights are getting in OK from Gatwick. They no longer fly here from Heathrow, that is a bit of a pain as you have to catch c coach between the two airports.

Jersey is talking about opening the airport on Christmas day if necessary.

Some people had travelled halfway around the world and just cannot do their last leg of their journey. There was an Aussie guy, his baggage had gone missing or something, he was in summer clothes with all his warmer things packed - and it was literally freezing. Poor guy, he was hving to wait it out.

It takes a lot to stop ME when I am determined on getting somewhere. All fine, but Gatwick was HEAVING with people. I would always advocate checking in and getting a boarding pass on line if you can. It certainly helped today.
