My favorite performer is all but forgotten today. Her name is Gale Sondergaard and she played some of the best villainesses of the 30's and 40's. She was originally cast as the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz (in a tight sequined dress and glamour make-up) but the producers rightly deciding to go with the traditional ugly witch. In fact, Walt Disney used her face as the model for the evil queen in Snow White.

She won the first Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Anthony Adverse". Basil Rathbone called her a female Moriarty in "Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman" and she murdered Bette Davis in "The Letter". And who can resist a woman who tries to kill Shirley Temple? She also gave incredible performances in "The Life of Emile Zola" and "Anna and the King" for which she was also nominated for an Oscar.

Her career ended in the late Forties when she and her husband, Herbert Biberman, were blacklisted. Biberman went to jail as one of the Hollywood Ten.

My favourite actress is Melina Kanakaredes, known mostly for her roles on Providence and CSI:NY.
