I love playing the Word Wizard game and even though I don't know many of the words, I score pretty well because I understand a bit about etymology, word roots and such.
But sometimes I run across a word that I don't recall ever seeing in my life and haven't a clue as to what its origins could be. It makes me think the quiz is making things up on the spot.

So today I ran into the word
Herberwe meaning
a harbor. Umm...ok. Didn't look the slightest bit familiar. Looking it up, I find it is obscure, Middle English and apparently used by Chaucer. I don't feel so bad now.

(Although I know there are some of you here who undoubtedly knew it

) But now I will remember that word for eternity.

So, have you run into any words that struck you as particularly odd, obscure, giggle-inducing, etc., that have stuck with you? Or any other favorite "weird words" that you'd care to share?
