The original "Dracula" with Bela Lugosi (1934?)
"The Thing" (1954). I never did watch how they killed the creature. Electrocution, I heard later.
I never did see "The Exorcist." The reviews kept me away from the theater. I do not like the sudden visual shock movies, when you know what's coming, but can't help yourself and watch anyway and regret it later but keep saying "It was only a movie."
It was years before I could watch the ending of "Psycho."
The bathtub scene didn't bother me, but I sure as heck didn't want to know what Norman's mom looked like. Hitchcock was a master storyteller.
Any video interviews with Yasser Arafat.
The scene in "Silence of the Lambs" where Agent Darling crawls under the garage door, removes the blanket from the Rolls and opens the back door to reveal....EEEEEEEEEE!

Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" scared me to death.

This thread sure generated a lot of virtual ink!
I always love it when men reveal they are vulnerable too!
The Birds? Why do the birds frighten people? I mean I know they were attacking and nothing could control them but it's odd that that one didn't frighten me as much as Psycho!

When I was very young, not sure of exact age, My dad let me watch Salems Lot with him. I was so terrified that I slept with the light on for months. I just could'nt get the images of that vampire boss coming out of my closet followed by all those wierd servant dudes that crawled out of that little room in the basement. [Frown]

I can fully understand that vampire thing too. Bats scare me even now when they fly around, I keep on figuring you never know after all!
All those silly vampire movies come and haunt me.
PS my daughter tells me they cut out a scene in Harry Potter where Ron, has a um er um, unfortunate incident with his wand and rather unexpected consequences. Guess they probably wouldn't have sold any toys on that one! Then again, boys would love it...

I can't really remember what movie I was scared of when I was a child, I think it was The Wizard Of Oz. It was probably because of the flying monkeys, especially the part when they rip the straw out of Scarecrow.
One movie though that does scare me though is "IT". I never got nightmares from a movie like that one did before. Who couldn't be afraid of a killer clown?? [Big Grin]
I really like when they show reruns of the old episodes of The Twillight Zone. They never get boring and always still are cool to watch and full of mystery even if you saw them a hundered times, like me.. [Big Grin]
I'm glad someone mentioned "The Birds". I'm not scared of it but it's one of my favorite movies!!!! [Smile] [Big Grin]

I just watched The Birds last night. It didn't really scare me, but I could see why it would scare a young child. It was suspenseful, weird, and a movie I'll add to my list of favourites!!!! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I'm not an adult (just 18 actually) but I guess that I can post something here also.
I didn't watch many scary movies when I was little because I knew I would have nightmares. The only ones I did watch were some that I saw with my older sister because I didn't want to look like a baby (typical). Now I love scary movies.
I do remember watching The Thing with our dad when I was about 5 or 6. It scared me to death. Now I watch it and wonder how that ever scared me.
The Holloween Tree, Fantasia, even Sleeping Beauty scared me.

I love watching old episodes of the Twilight Zone. The only one that ever scared me was the one with the soldier in the cylinder with the ballerina and the clown and they were trying to get out and finally at the end we found out that they were dolls. I saw that episode on New Year's Eve and I had nightmares, but only because of the clown.

I am absolutely terrified of clowns. When I was younger, we would go to the circus and they didn't bother me at all. As I've gotten older though, somehow I've become terrified of them. When my "friends" heard I was scared of clowns, they told me to watch It. I had never heard of the movie before and one of my good friends told me what it was about. I was mortified. As scared of clowns as I am already if I ever saw It, ohhhhh..........

I'm very hard to scare. The only time I had nightmares was after reading "Pet Sematary" (I was already 15, but I finished the book at 3 am, and I slept in our guest room then, in the cellar, and outside there was a real storm going on...). But "The Exorcist" came very close to scaring me. Same with the first "Nightmare on Elm Street", though I think this movie is somehow very funny. And, of course, "Psycho" and "The Birds". When I was eight or nine years old, I saw my first Edgar Wallace movie (the Germans turned nearly all his novels into movies, and the old ones are really great), the one about the friar with the lash... I don't know the English title. It was scary, but I remember being very calm and simply curious who was the murderer.
More recently, I got close to get chattery teeth when I saw "House on Haunted Hill" with Geoffrey Rush and Famke Janssen. That was REALLY scary!

I remember when I was young and my brother had just rented "The Exorcist" I threw an almighty tantrum until I was allowed to watch it, although I was way too young. I'll never forget that film, it terrified me so much I fell in love with it. It wasn't until years later I got to see it again in the cinema because of it being banned, but when I did, I still consider it an excellent horror movie.

Another show that I remember well from my childhood is a series called Hammer House of Horrors, does anyone else remember those? Two episodes stick in my mind, one where they have a child's birthday party and when they go to get something out of the fridge there is a severed head in there, then blood comes from everywhere, that messed me up good for a few days, and the other where these people pick up a hitchiker in a bright yellow mac, not quite sure of the storyline on this one but I know he killed people and he had this one really long fingernail which was the bit that freaked me out lol.

I remember jumping out of my skin when I saw Jaws for the first time. Especially the bit when the head rolls out!!!

I also remember watching "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and the child catcher absolutely petrified me. I watch it now in my 30s and it still scared the poo out of me. The bloke is seriously creepy and ugly.

Sparky, for your own safety don't attempt The Birds again, but I tell you it is very eerie and spooks me right out.

Even as a child I was addicted to scary movies, but three particular movies terrified me deeply and kept me awake, crying, praying, and hiding under the covers for a long long time:

1. " The Devil Doll " , which I saw on TV when I was five. It's about a mad scientist that shrinks men and women to the size of Barbie Dolls, then hypnotizes them and sends them out to kill people while they sleep.
Add to this the fact that I had a cruel Uncle who told me that at midnight, all my toys come alive and dance on me while I sleep, and I was a basket case. I never again played with another doll (except my Barbies, which I couldn't give up - but I tied them up at night, put them in a box, and stashed the box in the back of my closet every night).

2. When I was 7 yrs old and home with my second bad case of tonsillitis in one year, I happened to see the movie " Cheaper by the Dozen ". In this movie an entire large family all has to have their tonsils out at one time, and some of them are in quite a lot of pain and suffering from the operation. I also was under threat of a tonsillectomy at that time (which luckily I managed to avoid), but I was again frightened by my evil sadistic uncle who told me that tonsillectomies were done with a pair of household pliers, without anesthesia, and people often choked on the blood!

3. When I was 13, my best friend's older brother took us downtown to see a movie (what a treat!) Like other people in this thread, I didn't know that the movie was going to be the Exorcist , or even what it was about. After seeing that movie I couldn't be in the same room with a portrait or mirror hanging on the wall, because everytime I glanced over I saw the demon's face in it! This went on for many years. I saw the movie later when it was first shown on TV -- I was at a Tupperware party, and for a kick we turned it on and started watching. Three of us became as frightened as when we first saw it and regretted watching it again.
I have two teenagers who have both seen the Exorcist, and they think it's "lame", not scary at all. In fact they think it's rather funny.

The one that scared me most as a child was "Bad Ronald" I was around 10 years old at the time. It was on television, edited for television, mind you, but it still gives me the creeps when I think about it. Movies like that, where it could ACTUALLY happen, are far creepier than the blood and guts movies they make today.

Even though I'm still a child I'm answering this.

I'm not easily scared. Usually I get scared of suspense rather than actual fright.

Just a couple months ago I saw 'Salem's Lot' since I had just read the book. Everything was going just great, (I wasn't scared at all,) until the little boy vampire suddenly sat up straight in his coffin and bit the guy's neck! It didn't really scare me because it was a frightening part, but the initial surprise of the dead boy sitting up! However, the part when the young boy is knocking on the window truly did scare me.

I wasn't afriad of the 'main' vampire because he was blue! That totally ruined it for me, since I had read the book and knew that he didn't look that way.

I was deathly terrified in 'Twister.' I never even saw the end. Why, you might ask. Because I am deathly afraid of wind. Strange phobia, indeed, but it's true.

I can't ever being truly afraid during a horror movie. Even the recent hit 'The Haunting' didn't bother me. But, I am a very hardcore person.

I have to agree with a lot of people who answered The Wizard of Oz. I was afraid of the flying monkeys, too. But the worst part is the neighbor threatening to have Toto killed. I hate to see anything bad happen to an animal. For that same reason, I never watched The Wonderful World of Disney as a child. I would always cry when the animals were lost, threatened,or killed.

"The Lady in White" scared the crap out of me. I don't think I could actually tell you what it is about, but I just remember being frightened. Also my older sister forced me and my other sister to watch "Poltergiest" I don't think I had looked under the bed for years and I hate clowns now.

the movie that scared me when i was little (and still does to this day) wsa Chucky. I didnt like the fact that little dolls could come to life and kill me, so my mom had to take all my dolls out of my room and into hers so i could sleep at night

I would say Exorcist, Poltergeist, and Amittyville horror.

And the first was the worst. At least I got through the other two without freaking all the way home. That's right. I had to walk home in THe dark after I watched that.. Not a movie for anyone under the age, 90, ya know what I mean?

I must be a complete weirdo but scary movies never scared me as a child, I always told myself they were just movies and they weren't real. The funny thing is I get scared now watching movies about ghosts unless they're totally laughable like the remake of The Haunting. Other movies don't scare me I just hate it when I jump even though I expect it.
