hi all
the drug=propranolol (common blood pressure medication).
malaria is one of the three deadliest diseases and has been on the increase worldwide because of global warming. (for instance, jamaica recently reported an outbreak of malaria after it had been eradicated in that country for 50years.)
propanolol in combination with existing anti-malarial drugs in human cell cultures and mice reduced dose of anti-malarial drugs used to kill the parasites by TEN-fold.
significant!
this drug is cheap.
it is reliable.
it can even be used by a pregnant women a group particularly apt to get malaria.
research is underway to combine anti-malarial drugs with blood pressure medication.
haldar (northwestern university) believes this to have a high likelihood of success with the next step human clinical trials.
GREAT NEWS imo.

Thats great news as most countries with big Malaria problems cannot afford the expensive anti-malarials. Hope the clinical trials are completed soon.
