Well I love Terry Pratchett's stuff, especially the way it can make you laugh out loud, but I don't know if I would go so far as to say he's the best author in the world. Hard to say who I like best. The witches are great, and the Watch - must say I also have a soft spot for Death, if you see what I mean!

I think Rincewind is great, especially the way he discovered beer soup and named the Peach Nellie and designed footwear, in the lost Continent.

I think The Witches are my favorite as a group, but Detritus is probably my favorite single character.

I have been a Pratchett fan now for about twenty years. I have managed to accumulate all the Discworld series, with a handful of signed copies and have met the great man himself at various booksignings so yeah, I'd say he was my favourite author! The interesting thing about them is you can see how his writing style has matured with each book, with in-depth characters and ingenius plots - I make many trips back to my bookshelves to re-read my collection and never tire of them. Anyone I have introduced ( to date anyway ) to Pratchett has always come back to me raving on what a fantastic book they read and promptly become addicts themselves. As for favourite book - too many to choose from really, though I do have an affinity for most that focus on either Death or the Watch. If anyone hasn't seen them already, i have authored a handful of Pratchett quizzes - there's not many as I don't often have the time to sit and construct them, but feel free to take a look. Here's looking forward to receiving my pre-ordered DVD of The Hogfather lol!

I have enjoyed all the books by Terry Pratchett that I have read. My favorites are the books with DEATH in it, and my very favorite is Mort.

I'm a Terry Pratchett fan, too. Love the City Watch and Wizards. My favourite so far is 'Thud!'.

I have all of the Discworld series, many of them in hardback. As a member of the Guild of Fans and Disciples I tend to get advanced notice of a new release from the newsletter. My favourite character is probably Sam Vimes, especially since he became Duke of Ankh.

I love Pratchett. My favorite characters are death and his horse Binky, the death of rats and the witches. Nanny Ogg is my absolute favorite though. My cat is named in honor of hers. My Greebo isn't as ferocious as her Greebo, but it's a pretty close race.

The Discworld books are the best! Seriously. My favourites are, in order,
1 - Witches Abroad 2 - Hogfather 3 - The Last Continent 4 - Soul Music
My fifth would probably be one of the Watch novels, but I'm torn as to which one...

ohhh Otto the vampire photographer! He cracked me up.
I managed to get the first Discworld book signed by Pratchett. It takes pride of place on the bookshelf. I couldn't go to the shop where he was signing but rang them and begged and pleaded and offered my first born and they did it for me and sent it out. Sadly they didn't take up the offer of the first born though ...

oh no! Really? What a pain, GK. Im' am having a huge clean out of books lately and the Terry Pratchett ones will be the ones that are certainly staying. I know it was a while ago the link up there was posted, in fact it has expired so I had to google for the info, and that is just so sad - he'll only be sixty this year.

One of my best friends in high school was a huge Terry Pratchett fan.. she had a lot of the Discworld books and she tried to get me interested in reading them. I'm not sure why I never caught on to them, because it's the exact kind of humour that I usually like. Oh, well... to each her own I suppose. Then a little while later I got to reading a book called Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophesies of Agnes Nutter, Witch which is by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, and it was great! Around the same time I also read a Douglas Adams book called Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency which I think Pratchett fans might enjoy as well.

agreed, The Lost Continent is a very sympathetic book imo, and the one that makes Rincewind stand out better.
My fav characters include the wizards, because of their senseless academic bickering (ridcully is magnificent), the Horde for their own interesting group dynamics, same goes for the Borogravian army girls (ok, and lieutenant Blouse), Carrot and Detritus for their own brands of complex simplicity, and throw in the original watchmen sergeant Colon, Nobby and Vimes (for their excellent erratic detectoring).

Best author? In a way, yes. It is not big literature but his ability of being satirical, entertaining and educative at the same time is unique. Also, you can clearly see his development as a writer when you read the first seven or so discworld novels. It has been some time since I read them, so I can't remember all the names, but one of my favourite characters is one not mentioned yet: the big chest with the many little feet.
By the way, I saw this little gem on wikipedia: "Pratchett, who was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire "for services to literature" in 1998,[6] holds the record for the most shoplifted author in Britain.[11]"

I've only read the first 7 or 8 Discworld books (sudden unemployment has prohibited me from buying new books for quite some time), but I've enjoyed them very much. My favorite book so far is Small Gods, and my favorite "character" so far is the luggage. Gotta admire that combo of intelligence, loyalty, and lethality...
