Just reported it Sue, it was a new number that wasn`t listed on the site you linked to. Reporting it doesn`t mean I can`t still amuse myself with the scammer though!

Mate, keep us posted on your adventures. I have seen a Nigerian scammer led on for over a year, and it made hilarious reading.

You would think they would get the English correct before the sent it out. I have not seen this before, is it very commonplace?
My service provider blocks a lot of spam (thank goodness). I ususally get e.mails selling 'penny stocks'. Very annoying.

I must be a lucky person, I received another email yesterday .........From the Desk of Charles Brown

institutions
in my country concerned with foreign contract payments.

I am the final signatory to any transfer or remittance of funds moving

My generous friend from Euro Millions International has replied and once again congratulated me on my good fortune, the following email is fairly well written and full of legal type jargon.

Story to date...

Received notification of my winning some sort of lottery.

I replied to that email and sent my details, as far as the scammer is aware I`m an 87 year old man that is ill.

I received a reply stating that I had to make 1 of 2 choices as to how I get the money.

I replied stating that my medication made choosing difficult and would the scammer help me choose.

He replied....

Pick an option.

Once again, congratulations.

Edited to add.........Lady1 these types of scams are very commonplace in Australia,USA and Britain, and perhaps in other countries that I`m not knowledgeable about.

Lol Sue, registered mail is how I would like the scammer to send a picture of the cheque, at least that would cost the beggar some cash.

I clearly don't believe anyone is going to get any money from these obvious scams, but please tell me, how are they going to get money out of you? I don't understand what the catch is - am I missing something? Are they trying to get your details to defraud you through your bank or what?

I have a friend, lives in South Africa, has an account (I think in Jersey) and someone from Europe tried to transfer funds out of his account. How they got his information no one knows. Fortunately the bank decided to call him to confirm the transfer so no money was lost.

Last year 'someone' authorised the sale of approx.80pct of our shares in the US. The shares were sold and the money deposited into our account. We assume they were waiting for the funds to clear so they could be transferred into another account. The person had all our information and the only reason we found out was because my husband phoned the US about something else and asked what the balance in the account was. Realising it was far too high, he asked what the amount was for. Had he not phoned we (and the bank) would have been short a lot of cash.

There are many scams like these going around but have not heard much about the winning lottery one.

Lady1 the way this particular scammer is going to try and get money from me, I think, is when I contact the "solicitors" mentioned in the last email. No doubt the solicitors will want to receive money upfront before they act on my behalf. I`ll post the reply from the solicitors when I receive it.

Roos - I'm not far from London, couldn't you authorise me to pick up your prize? I promise to send it on to you. I don't need the money myself as I won the New York Lottery twice last year and have just won a European lottery this week. Add that to the large sum that I'll shortly be receiving from a nice gentleman in Nigeria and I'm doing quite nicely. I could even buy a first class plane ticket and bring it out to you.

I work for a credit card company. I once had a call where someone had been told they'd won a European lottery and had been asked to give their credit card details to claim the prize. They were asking me whether I thought this was a good idea.

I asked if he'd ever entered a European lottery and he said no. I pointed out that I've bought a lottery ticket nearly every week for over ten years and hadn't won more than the occasional tenner, so the chances of him having won a lottery that he hadn't entered were remote.

I'm not usually sarcastic with customers but sometimes.....

I wonder what they would say if you said you would pick up the prize yourself roos. Guess then they will dissapear from sight never to be heard from again. Wonder if the police should be investigating the "solicitors"?

Most Police Authorities advise against communicating with scammers, especially giving such details as your postal address, even though they may offer to send a photocopy of the cheque. They won't do so of course, but they'll have your address, which will assist with further scams.
Unless you're very confident of your abilities, it's best not to communicate with scammers in any way, and certainly not from your main e.mail address. This tells them the address is genuine, and may encourage them to dig deeper into your personal and financial affairs, using information hacked from your service provider. At best, it can result in additional spam of all types, and at worst can be physically dangerous if direct contact is eventually made with the spammer organisation.
Fortunately I don't get too many postal or e.mail scams, and would never respond to them anyway. The 'Nigerian' cash scams, known as '419 scams' from the section of Nigerian Law which makes them illegal, don't necessarilly originate in Nigeria, and can come from anywhere.
Every couple of months I do get telephone scams, offering 'excellent' investment opportunities such as currency trades, bond options, etc. Usually the caller has an American accent, sounds friendly and knowledgable, and gullible people are tempted by the opportunity of easy and quick profits on their investment. You're told that time is of the essence, and you need to send them a money transfer, often to a West European or U.S. Bank, but if you succomb you can bet your life you'll never see your money again, let alone any profits!

According to our local newspaper last night I was targetted by a telephone scam a few days ago.

Someone from SKY television contacted me telling me the maintenance contract/guarantee on my satellite system had expired and if I didn't take out an agreement with them I will have to pay £60 per hour plus all manner of other expenses if anything went wrong with my system.

I never take extended warrantees or maintenance contracts with anyone so said thanks but no thanks, I would take my chances and the system owed me nothing as it had never had any problems over the years.

Apparently had I agreed to the contract I would then have been asked for my bank details. Sky have said they know nothing about any phone calls, they are nothing to do with them. Nice one.

Man they think of everything. How many people would not question someone saying they were from SKY television (or any other large well known company).

On a couple of occasions I've had calls from 'Barclays Bank', a major UK and international bank, advising me of a redundant bank account which I held some years ago, which they would like to close.
They sounded very professional and plausible, as I have in the past held accounts at several different branches of Barclays.
The amount supposedly held in the redundant account was fairly small, a couple of hundred pounds, and they wanted to arrange a transfer to my present account, and could they have the details. I told them that I never gave such information to unsolicited callers, whoever they claim to be, and I would accept a cheque, but first could they tell me their name and which branch of Barclays they were calling from? They refused to give a name, but told me they were calling from 'xxxxx' branch. I then asked if they'd call me back later as I was involved in an important meeting. When I phoned 'xxxxx' branch of Barclays, they knew nothing about a 'Redundant accounts' department, and suggested I visit my local branch, who would carry out a search on my behalf. I did this, and found - of course - there was no redundant account in my name at any Barclays bank branch, so yet another scammer seeking confidential bank details!
I'm pretty 'switched on' to these scams, and warning bells ring immediately when I get unsolicited calls offering any sort of financial benefit, but I wonder how many innocent people fall for them and lose large sums of money?

Sadly the people who often fall for scams are those with least to lose, they really could do with a little (or lot) of extra cash. Locally we have recently had two cases of elderly people fallig for the 'You have won...' scams, both lost their life savings. The last one came to light when he tried to take out a loan to send them even more money in order to process his claim. Heartbreaking.

Bulkyard? Anyone from London would have jumped at that as there's no such place. These guys have no attention to detail, and any document with poor English and spelling mistakes is a dead giveaway. None originate from the countries on the headers, always from places with no extradition laws and no interest in catching criminals.
Now I hope Cindy Howard isn't a long lost relation...

It is a scam, please do not get involved as they will only ask for money or your bank details then steal your money. You have won nothing at all. They are criminals.

Never respond to these emails with information. If something is too good to be true then it is not going to be true. If you haven't entered any competitions you cannot win, simple.

I played around with the original scammer a bit but have finally sent an email to the "solicitors" and am eagerly awaiting their response.
