I wonder how many people genuinely believe these and end up getting hurt?

The two I received did go into my junk mail.

I wonder where they are getting the e.mail addresses from.

I just received another one, same rubbish about the euro lottery and a million.

Those of you have received these in the past week, could you check to see which email address you have received them through.

Funtrivia doesn't give out or sell your email addresses, I am hoping that there has not been a breach in security.

Mine arrived in the email address which is not available to the public here, it is not in my profile but is the email address which the site holds for me.

Many of these scams arrive at my e-mail and don't even go directly to junk mail, they arrive in the regular inbox. I don't even look at them anymore. If I can tell by the sender or subject, then I automatically report it as spam. If I can't tell that way, then I open it, take a quick look, and then report it as spam if it appears to be a scam.

I was watching a show on TV one day a few months ago, and they had a couple of people on the show who had fallen for these scams and still believed them to be true. It was really sad. One woman had sent a lot of money to her so-called 'boyfriend'. The scammers had sent her a picture of some model that they had found on the internet. The people running the show had investigators show the woman proof that the man she had been talking to was not who he claimed to be.

Mine have been diverting to Junk which is why I am asking people to check there for any received his week. Until this week I hadn't received any in absolutely ages.

Hmm...I usually get at least 4-5 a week of some sort. They change. One week they will be about winning some prize, and the next week it will be a totally different prize.

I haven't had any at all, SUe, if that makes you feel any better. The only spam I get lately is about buying stocks.

The ones I am interested are just this week, one of the two mentioned above.

I got this mail the same way as Sue - on an email address which this site holds for me, but I use(d) the same email for other sites too. I, for one, am absolutely sure FunTrivia doesn't share our emails.

If you don't want that measly £120,000 Mada then just send it my way.

These guys are insulting our intelligence! Anyone worldwide who'd played some FT geography quizzes would have been disgusted by such a flagrant lack of concern for correct details. Peterborough (as it is actually written) is a town and once county in East Anglia, 100 miles north of London and a bloody awful drive as I can confirm. SE18 is some godforsaken suburb near Catford (I'm from NW, we don't learn SE's) and the sensible thing to do if attempting to steal your money would be to look up the actual place, or better still not give one as the Post Office tell Londoners never to add the name of the town to the postal address as one refers directly to the other.

As for dolz's little present from London, clause 1 ought to have given it away as anyone claiming a lottery prize is never expected to visit and unload cash at a "remitting payment cash centre!." as the whole nature of winning a lottery is they pay you. It also helps (always actually) if you've bought a ticket first. The second guarantee of a scam is being told you've won a draw you never entered. But enough people pay or they'd stop doing it. There are some stories around the forums where someone had said he needed to borrow money from the scammer and ended up taking them for a few hundred pounds. Made a change.

if you convert that to a local number it's 07024 021226. Numbers beginning 07 in the UK are mobile numbers, costing a minimum of 5p a minute for 077,8 or 9 numbers which are for cellphones. However 070 and 076 respectively are call divert and pager numbers, the first usually costing from 20 to 50p a minute, so just by ringing these numbers and staying on for 5 minutes a local can blow £2.50 and goodness only knows the international rate calling a call diversion number. Anyone phoning the UK from abroad unless it starts 441 or 442 you are going to be charged pots, be careful!

It is the email addresses which ought to really ring bells if nothing else. IF, and that is a very big IF the emails were anything other than scams I would think they would actually have a proper domain name, they wouldn't be using yahoo, myway and gawab!

Actually on television at present there is a lot of promotion of Euromillions, they have maassive amounts to be won soon and it cannot be rolled over. Perhaps these are all genuine - I must look in my deleted folder at once!

I've seen some of the worst scams lately about job sites. Because job seekers like myself occasionally post to a site and put our resumes or CVs on there, even taking precautions not to reveal this or that as we should, they still have our e mail address and there are about five companies who will send you a job offer for an online job that sounds pretty much like what I'm looking for!
The person's name is listed, and then, the domain exists.
They even have a bonafide looking website.

However, if I ever get anything that looks that real, I stick it in Google to see if anyone else has gotten it.

To add to all my riches, I've won a holiday. A nice young man called James 'phoned me today. All I have to do is go to a 2 hour presentation and I'll get £50.00 of shopping vouchers and a holiday for four in Teneriffe.

The conditions were that I would have to bring my husband and it must be the family that took the holiday. I told him that my husband and oldest daughter would rather be boiled in oil than go on a 'Sun' holiday, and couldn't I take 3 friends for a girl's holiday instead. He was a bit perplexed so I followed up with the fact that we were a rather dysfunctional family and I was on the verge of divorce as I suspected my husband of having an affair with his (male) boss. I then told him I suspected my oldest daughter may be pregnant anyway and the terms of my youngest daughter's probation forbade her from travelling outside the UK for the next couple of years.

I felt sorry for the poor boy in the end. Mind you, if he'd have phoned an hour earlier he'd have woken me up and received a much curter reply.

I love it. It is tempting to send you a holiday with your problems, perhaps we ought to set up a fund here for you dear.

Supersal we get a lot of calls like that. They are genuine but the presentation is just a sales ploy to sell you time-share. The telephone operators can never understand why I say Im not interested, they keep insisting 'but its free!'.

Nothing is ever free there is always a catch.

Ditto regarding the calls. It`s not timeshare here in Sydney but holiday packages. I`m offered(Lily just hangs up straight away, as do I if they cannot pronounce my surname correctly) free this and free that but when I ask if I get to choose from the freebies I`m told no I must just take what I`m given, as I never have any thought of actually attending the presentation I`m not fussed. Mostly I let the telemarketer rabbit on for a while then explain that where they want me to go is too far away.
I have asked for my name to be removed from their lists and have also opted out online from Australian based telemarketing companies but I still get calls from the lot of them. I get so many that I`m not always polite.

I`m still playing around with the Euro Millions scammers btw, they must think they have a real live one on their hands as I`m asking some pretty dumb questions.

I haven't received any of these current scams. Nobody wants to give me any money . There's a comprehensive list of ways spammers might get e-mail addresses here.

I have one e-mail address that is used only by my ISP for communication to me. It has never been used anywhere else. Yet some spam is starting to come through on this address. I don't think it's a case of the ISP giving out the address, or that the e-mail database has been hacked. I reckon it's more likely that the e-mail address has been 'guessed' by a spammer or two (see number 10 in the page linked to above).

My best friend got her honeymoon by going to one of those timeshare presentations. They said it was worth the few hours out of their time to get a free vacation in the Poconos, and apparently once they sat through the sales pitch they weren't pressured at all.
I guess it could be worth it if you really want to go where they're trying to get you to go.
