I moved out at 19. We moved out of the house me and my sister grew up in when my grandma died and moved up the street to her house. When I was ready to move out, I moved back down the street. Still there but the situation is starting to drive me mad.

I haven't yet My dad says I have to be out the door by the time I'm 25. But a few years ago, he said 18 was the cutoff and I'm still here :P I hope to move out on my own shortly after finishing university though. I doubt I could afford to any earlier than that.

I married and moved out at age 18, baby at 19, divorce at 21. Moved back home w/ baby for about 8 months, finished college, and now I am 52, with a 20 year old still at home (who says she is never leaving!!!)

I left home when I was 18. I'd been planning to leave anyway to go to university but one of my grades wasn't good enough so I didn't get in. However, psychologically I was geared up to leaving home so I got a job in London and left rural England for the big city. I went to university a couple of years later - I spent some vacations at home but never went back to live. I had some friends once whose son simply wouldn't leave home. They hinted, left estate agency details lying around, and had long conversations with or in front of him about when he was going to move out. He was in his early 30s and showed no sign of shifting. Why would he? They weren't violent, they had a nice house, and the food was good; it was like an hotel without the need to tip the chambermaid. Then he decided to go on a long holiday - he could afford it given that paying his way at home still left him with a lot of spare cash. When he got back... they were gone. They'd sold the house, packed up, and moved. He wouldn't leave home so the home left him. He tried to find out where they'd gone but all the neighbours, their friends, etc were sworn to secrecy. They did eventually tell him the address of their very tiny new house which had no room for a third adult... but only after they knew he'd found somewhere to live. It still makes me laugh when I think about it.

At 17, I was given the choice by my mother....
Go to school, get a job, or move out. I moved the next day.

My father left home before me! LOL My mam died when I was quite young, leaving only myself and my little brother living at home with him by the time I got to my teens. My father met someone and moved in with her, leaving me and my brother in the family home when I was around 22. I finished studying, worked and saved like a lunatic and moved into my very own place at 24...it was fantastic as I'd been running a house since around 18 - and suddenly there was only me to look after

Moved out at 19 to university, but I lived out in the city rather than in college accommodation. Relationships had broken down rather, so I didn't go back home for holidays and such. Continued to move around the UK for the next 15 years. Now we live walking distance from each other. They are much better grandparents than they were parents.

Was the thought of a job so bad?

My moving out at 16 was a mutual decision between me and my parents. Although my relationship with them was reasonably cordial, they knew I was going mad from boredom in my small rural home town, and I couldn't legally join the military until I turned 18. So I left, hitchhiking and flopping on friend's couches until that happy day. My first job was writing ad copy and the occasional article for newspapers - it paid more than I was making in the forces until I'd been in for 3 years.
I returned to my home town for a visit several years ago, just to see if anything had changed. Many of my classmates had never left town or gone anywhere, and didn't plan to until the day they died. How anybody can live like that is completely beyond me. For me, travel is how I keep my balance, my edge, and my sanity.
