The Super Bowl for movie lovers is approaching, and there doesn't appear to be any clear favorites. Who or what do you think should be recognized by the Academy? Who or what do you think will be recognized?

I think Amelie has a good chance at Best Foreign Picture. My personal favorites are The Royal Tenennbaums and Riding In Cars With Boys. I think that LOTR will pick up some technical awards but has no chance for the major prizes.

Go.

Totally agree with Amelie for best Foreign, but I think that LOTR has a very decent chance for best film. Although it completely depends on the judges.

It will be a close race between "LOTR" and "A Beautiful Mind".
Saw them both, were both wonderful, but I know how the Academy works.
My pick is "A Beautiful Mind."

As far as LOTR goes, people I know who loved the movie also loved the books. Those who hadn't read the books, or simply thought that they were decent, found the movie to be entertaining, but not Oscar worthy. I was eager to see the characters come to life on screen, but left the theater full of "anticipointment."

I haven't seen Amelie, but I've heard that it is good.
It's already won the Golden Globe for best foreign.
So, I'm assuming a shoe in for the Oscar.

Picture is always tough.
It depends on how the Academy votes.
These films aren't judged by a panel or anything.
They are sent out to the entire Academy membership along with ballots.

The nominations are soon. I can't remember if it's this Wed or next Wed. I've only seen LOTR.
Haven't seen any of the others likely to be nominated.
Fantasy/Sci-Fi epics do not do well in the Best Picture Category, only in the technical side. I think that Beautiful Mind will be the favorite.
In The Bedroom and Mulholland Drive will certainly be the dark horses in the category. also consider Gosford Park, Excellent movie! and perhaps Moulin Rouge and Bridget Jones's Diary.

I believe that Shrek will win the animated category.
Nothing can compete with it.

Drama Actress - Halle Berry, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman and Sissy Spacel figure prominently here...tough call on the win.
Drama Actor - Russell Crowe, Will Smith, Kevin Spacey, Billy Bob Thornton and Denzel Washington figure to be nominated. tough call on the win.

too much stuff...I have better things to do.
bye for now

A small correction, LA. Amelie didn't actually win the Golden Globe, though it was nominated. It lost to a Spanish film, if memory serves.

I think:

Best Picture: A Beautiful Mind

Best Actor: Russell Crowe

I really enjoyed LOTR, but strangely, my husband, who's never read the books, liked it more than I did and I've read the books a dozen times!
