I'm not much of a Fantasy reader but I thought that Disc World sounded interesting so after I spent some time trying to find the first book "Color of Magic' I came across this thread on the Internet that you should not read the books in the order they were written. The alarms went off and the more I researched the more complexed it became with which book you should read and so forth. Basically none of it made sense to a guy who has read none of them so far so could you fill me in before I get started? What's the order?

Really, I don't think it matters in the earlier books which order you read them in but I can't see how you can go wrong if you did read them in order. For the most part I reckon that the books stand on their own anyway.

I've got most the disc world books and love them - even got "Colour of Magic" signed

Jump on in and read them whatever order you get them in and enjoy!

OK thanks,,,, so the story really doesn't go anywhere then? I assume you're familiar with the Star Wars series where if you saw the first movie in the 70's that it later was to become known as number 4 in the series. That's what I've been told about Disc World. With that I've read that the more interesting ones are the later publications and they should be read first to hold interest in the entire thing.

Really? Interesting - see I like the earlier one better NOt saying I don't like the later ones but if I'm short of reading material I'll grab a Disc World book and it'll always be the earlier ones.

Now I have a slighly different take on what to do. I did not like the 2 earliest books, Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic as much as many of the later ones but some of the later ones do follow on,sort of, from each other. For example the books about Sam Vimes or the witches do follow a chronology within the series although each book's plot stands well on its own. similarly the books about Susan also follow a chronology. Try Guards guards, Men at arms,Feet of clay about the night watch and sam vimes or Wyrd sisters, Witches abroard and Lords and ladies about the witches. But mainly ejoy the books:) and give them a go.

The first one I read was the watch Trilogy, then the Lost Continent, and some others as I came across them in the library, before I went on a hunt to track the books down in sequence, and had The Colour of Magic been the first book that I read, I do not know if I would have continued.
However I did introduce the books to my wife and two boys, and now have to fight who gets to read them first when we get a new one from the library.

Love Disc World! I've read Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series and each book can stand on it's own but there are references to events in prior books that just enrich the current story. It may be the same for Disc World but I haven't noticed it. Although, I've read only about 5 of his books.
