Hello--

We are thinking of taking a cruise to Alaska on Holland America. Has anyone been on such a cruise? Any advice on picking a cabin, etc.? (We are in our 50s, and we're not taking kids along. Neither of us has ever been to Alaska, or on a cruise.)

Thanks,
Robyn

We cruised to Alaska last summer for our 20th wedding anniversary. It was a fantastic trip that I'd do over and over again.
We sailed with Princess and were definitely pleased with everything on the ship. I don't know anything about the Holland line.
My best advice on picking a cabin is to get one with a balcony - it's worth the extra cost. We spent many hours sitting on our balcony watching the moutains go by, and when you reach the glaciers, it's a much more comfortable way to see them too. Midship is generally best if anyone suffers from motion sickness too.
We went on a whale watching excursion out of Juneau and saw Humpback whales bubble net feeding. That's an experience I won't soon forget!

I've just done it on the ferry - it is gorgeous. It can be wet and sometimes chilly - rain gear and sweaters will keep you enjoying yourselves. We spent every moment possible outside - there is always something beautiful to see.

I've been on several cruises and leave in a few weeks (I can give you the day, hour, and minute countdown) for one to the Caribbean. I've never been on one to Alaska, but you can PM me for any questions on cruising in general! You will love it!

We have sailed with Holland American twice and enjoyed it very much, however that was before they were taken over by Carnival. My understanding is that the two lines are run differently and Holland American is still classy. We cruised Alaska with Princess (about 15 years ago) and it is a spectacular cruise. We regret that we didn’t take the cruise tour and visit Denali National Park when we were there. A balconey would be nice for watching the caving of the glaciers, the only problem is there is no guarentee that the action will be on you side of the ship.

Get deck plans and find out where your cabin will be before you pay. We did not and ended up with restricted views on the Norwegian Wind. Everything else was great and you will love the trip.
