The oldest quiz (Jan 4, 2006) still has a "new" icon next to it, but the second oldest quiz (Jan 5, 2006) does not.

Is that "new" icon perhaps also controlled by the number of plays (notice the oldest quiz has far fewer plays)?

Very much so, though for the life of me I can't give you a number. Actually, I think it is not number of plays as such, but number of players who have rated it, which is a very different thing.

My layperson's understanding is that a quiz will be marked "new" until it has been rated by 20 players and is over 20 days old. This status is updated every Monday. New quizzes are displayed at the top of your individual list and at the top of every category (unless there are Editors Choice quizzes in either of these, in which case new quizzes are listed thereafter). Note that ratings by players whose average rating is less than 2 (poor) are generally ignored.

I have two quizzes that are over two years old (one of which is pretty funny if you like the bean scene from Blazing Saddles) that are still "new".

Actually, according to the info above the list of quizzes in the edit screen, it says that the quiz has to be online for 3-4 weeks AND be rated 30 times. I have one that has been on since December, but it hasn't been rated 30 times, so it still is "new".

I have two quizzes that were put online in 2002 and 2003 that still have the 'New' label. One has been rated 15 times, so it should get a rank sometime in late 2012.
