OK, this thought was started by another thread. Who do you think is the best actor to never receive an Oscar nomination?

We'll, this person HAS recieved some Oscar nods, but has never won and that is a HUGE mistake. The person is . . . Sigourney Weaver (3 nods, no wins) PS. I think Alan Rickman has been nominated once, but I could be wrong.

another in the same place as Ms. Weaver would be Morgan Freeman...3 nominations, and no wins...he's a talent beyond believe...and he's never won anything...i truly believe he's one of the most underated actors out there...as with Edward Norton...been nominated twice, and hasn't won...and he should have...he's amazing...

I thought George Clooney was wonderful in O, Brother Where Art Thou, and The Perfect Storm. You know, one actor who was nominated and over-looked a Bazillion times was Richard Burton. I thought he pulled off some fine performances.

Couldn't resist trying to find out if Rickman's been nominated, so I looked it up. Looks like Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman (isn't that just the cutest name? I had to put it in here!) has been nominated for several awards and won several others. But, no Oscar nod, yet. Rickman's Nominations and Awards

I have to agree with rj211 on Gary Oldman. No one performance of his particularly stands out, but I think he is one of the very best. He can play such a variety of characters and interacts well with all of his co-stars.

maybe I should have said...was there a great performance that was not recognized? for the ones you mentioned that got a nod but no win. the winner, I'm sure, was very deserving. many good actors never get that role. for example, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, etc. consistently land excellent roles that are Oscar worthy. However, many never get recognized because they do films that do not require a tour de force performance. many stars both big ones and indie ones have been mentioned above. maybe all it takes is the right role in the right movie? Look at Russell Crowe...two best actor nods already. but the vehicle (that's speak for the movie) was excellent stuff, whether you liked it or not. 'Gladiator' and 'A Beautiful Mind'

Gary Oldman should have received an oscar for his performances in Bram Stoker's Dracula and Sid and Nancy!

not sure about that one...but I'm sure someone will look it up. I'm just lazy...and kinda busy here at work.
no awards show has credibility...are you kidding me? how do you objectify something that is so subjective? you can't...the reason they do it is for the exposure.

I totally agree on Gary Oldman! He was SO great in "Bram Stoker's Dracula", and also in "Immortal Beloved", and I actually thought that he had received an Oscar years ago... I am surprised now. I would've given him at least two or three... Alan Rickman should have an Oscar, too. Another one that comes to my mind is Johnny Depp. I don't think he has received an Oscar, or even a nomination yet, am I right on this? But he is also a great actor, and he really can play ANY role!
The biggest injustice, though, has been in the year 2000 - why the hell didn't they even nominate Joseph Fiennes for his role in "Shakespeare In Love"? He would have deserved it so much more than Gwyneth Paltrow!!! I really think that Gwyneth Paltrowe is a good actress, but she just didn't have enough to act to justify this award. She wasn't bad, but Fiennes was better! A movie I would have given her the Oscar for was "Great Expectations". She was brilliant. Although I don't like her. Ethan Hawke is another one, and so is Ewan McGregor. Great young actors, but no Oscar in sight.

These two actors were nominated but did not win for performances that just blew me away. Joaquin Phoenix acted circles around Russell Crowe in Gladiator and should have won supporting actor. The other was Sean Penn in Dead Men Walking - a stunning performance. It was a crime that he didn't win. Susan Sarandon was good but Penn was the movie.

Has anybody yet mentioned the brilliant, talented-beyond-belief Christian Bale? I don't think he has an Oscar (correct me if I'm wrong...), although he exceeds himself with every new movie he makes. One of the VERY BEST actors of his generation! (Funny, though, that hardly anyone seems to know who he is. When I heard he'd be the new Batman I almost jumped for joy and told everyone, "Christian Bale will be in 'Batban Begins'," and all I got as an answer was "Christian who?" Is it the same with you guys? Although I must admit that I don't want any fifteen-year-old girls [no offense meant; I'm talking about bad clichés here] to say things like, "Oh he is SO TOTALLY cute/hot/good-looking/whatever in Batman," because he's so much more than that!) Oops, got a little carried away here... By the way, does Liam Neeson have an Oscar?

Gary Oldman deserved nominations for The Professional (along with almost everyone ELSE on the cast!) and as Rosencrantz, too. But then, I like those types of films. He's just so stunning, though. And Johnny Depp, finally nominated for oscars for Pirates and Neverland, but still hasn't won. He's like Robin Williams. How many great movies must he do before he gets his oscar? I mean, Benny and Joon, Fear and Loathing, Gilbert Grape... The man is amazing, and I thought he was hot WAY back before it was COOL to think he was hot. Heck, I thought he was hot on 21 Jumpstreet. But then, I WAS a teenager then. Though he's won an oscar now, for Mystic River, I don't think Tim Robbins has gotten nearly enough attention from the Academy, either. Two nominations. And one was for Best Director. What about Shwashank, Hudsucker, Jacob's Ladder for crying out loud!

Let me add a few...
1. The first one that comes to mind is Jim Carrey. 2 Golden Globe wins and not even one Oscar nomination? While I truly haven't seen an Oscar-worthy performance from him, a nomination seems deserved. For "Man In The Moon", if nothing else.
2. Mary Louise-Parker. Solid supporting actress but never recognized.
3. Steve Martin. OK, many of his films are plain goofy - but sometimes when he hits he nails it. I still think his turn in "All Of Me", while broad, was brilliant.
There are probably others that evade me at the moment. As for muliple nominees (but no wins): Peter O'Toole, Burton (agreement there) and Barbara Stanwyck. Charlize Theron can win on her first try and these decades-long contributors to film couldn't win even once? Seems odd (and I'm really not saying that Theron didn't deserve her award there...).

If memory serves me right in recent years Peter O'Toole was approached to see if he would accept an oscar for his contributions to the film world but he turned it down stating that he had still time to win one on his own.

I think O'Toole finally did accept that Lifetime Achievement Award. Grudgingly, of course .

I'd like to see Vincent D'Onofrio recognized for his work. He is a diverse talent, who brings life to every character he creates. For example, Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black, The Cell, and he's got such an interesting character on Law & Order: Criminal Intent....

Paul Giamatti, to name one offhand. American Splendor and Sideways?
I think Tim Robbins can live with what he's got now - he was good in Mystic River, but the movie itself as well as Shawshank Redemption are severely overrated.
I pay less and less attention to the Oscars anyhow - they can't choose foreign films worth a flip, let alone Best Picture films - really only the actor and actress categories matter, and people put forth so many great performances every year even a nomination is like a win.

I haven't ever seen Mystic River, and I agree Shawshank is probably overrated, but I still think his performance was stellar. In any case, I really prefer The Hudsucker Proxy and Jacob's Ladder, but the Academy isn't known for giving out awards to those fringe-type movies. (Well, sort of.)
I do agree about the Oscars, though. Although, every once in a while they nominate someone that makes me think, "Really? Were there so few good movies this year that you felt THEY deserved an award?" Like Kate Winslet in Titanic. Now, I'm a sappy female. And frankly, I like Leonardo DiCaprio. (Love him or hate him, the guy has talent.) So, I liked Titanic well enough. But the acting in that movie was barely worth noticing, and Kate Winslet wasn't even among the best of THOSE performances.

Agreed. DiCaprio is a very fine actor, and his recent flurry of nominations is well deserved.
Also, didn't mean to imply Shawshank or Mystic were bad films, because they aren't, and are probably a tad above average - but they are overrated, usually because people remember the acting is solid and ignore the rest of it, which contains some problems.
