I asked this question elsewhere, but (understandably) it was swamped by others posting their favourite teary songs.

I'm asking for opinions. It's probably best answered by people who actually know this song. The song is "Songbird" by Fleetwood Mac. I'll show the lyrics below. Now, I've always considered it a particularly sad song that does make me tear up. I won't say why. Somebody recently told me that they thought it was a beautiful love song. What's your opinion? I don't think the words are enough, I think you need to have heard it (but perhaps not):

"For you, there'll be no more crying,
For you, the sun will be shining,
And I feel that when I'm with you,
It's alright, I know it's right

To you, I'll give the world
to you, I'll never be cold
'Cause I feel that when I'm with you,
It's alright, I know it's right.

And the songbirds are singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before.

And I wish you all the love in the world,
But most of all, I wish it from myself.

And the songbirds keep singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before, like never before."

I should add that I've always believed that the third last line (at least) began with "But" rather than "Like"

I've always thought "Songbird" was a love song, the lyrics are beautiful and very romantic. Maybe the way Christine McVie sings the song makes it sound a bit melancholic. But I still consider it a love song.

Thnks for your thoughts minkpenny. I'd always thought of it as a song to a lost love i.e. someone the writer had broken up with, but still loved. I had someone who hadn't heard it before, listen to it and interestingly they thought it was a song to someone who is now dead. I guess that qualifies as a lost love, but I hadn't thought of that.

My line of thought has always lain in different parts of the song:

"For you, there'll be no more crying"
"to you, I'll never be cold"
"And I wish you all the love in the world,
But most of all, I wish it from myself."
"And the songbirds keep singing,
BUT they know the score"

It could be a romantic song, or it could be a song from a parent to a child. I think it's open to interpretation - "Danny Boy" is the same way.

That's what's so great about this song. There are many different interpretations to it and that makes it very interesting.

That's fantastic stu. I'd never even thought of that and looking at it, it could be that. As mink says it's open to interpretation, something I hadn't considered in listening to it for 30 odd years.

I like this one.

Now And Forever

When love is new
And the world is out reaching for you
We try hard to hold it all in our hands
But it slips through like soft drifting sands
But drying the tears can build it all like new

Now and forever
Remember the words from my heart
Will always be true
Now and forever
Together and all that I feel
Is my love for you

Learning each day
That the right time was so far away
To tell you the things I knew
Now it's clear
That the moment we searched for is here
And counting the years is all I want to do

Now and forever
Remember the words from my heart
Will always be true
Now and forever
Together and all that i feel
Is my love for you

Hold me as close as love will allow
Until all your fears are gone
What has all past is over now
I'm here with you
I'm here with you
I'm holdi'n on
I'm holdi'n on

Now and forever
Remember the words from my heart
Will always be true
Now and forever
Together and all that I feel
Is my love for you

Now and forever
Remember the words from my heart
Will always be true
Now and forever
Together and all that I feel
Is my love for you

I don't think that was what Eraserhead was thinking when he/she (sorry, my mind isn't working to well today) started the post. and I don't think Candy Shop is really counted a love song, it's somewhat lacking in soppy lyrics.

This being a set of lyrics.

Ah. I find sarcasm tags very useful there. Text is pretty hard to convey tone of voice.

I am very familiar with this song. My older sister was a big fan of Fleetwood Mac when I was growing up, and she always had their albums available to listen to. I've always thought this was a very pretty song, and I love the way Christine McVie sings it.
