Sorry judgejudy but 'Gone With The Wind' will not explain "Scarlet." The original was a masterpiece (in my opinion). I don't think a sequel should ever have been written. I can understand why it made no sense as it rambles from place to place too much. You definitely should read the original, though.

I just finished "The Kite Runner." It is sad, but very interesting and well written (in my opinion).
