An early April Fool's joke? A slick marketing exercise? An 'Emperor wearing no clothes' moment?

A French perfume company has released a new scent that has NO scent! Dadadandy will launch Choix this Friday at Selfridges in London, for FORTY quid a bottle.

See the full story here.

It is nice to see that the spirit of PT Barnum exists.

That would be like selling a rock and calling it a pet. Oh, wait a minute, that's been done too.... What will people think of next and why can't I have thought of it?

Just think of all the people who will be thought to be using it! I am in fact wearing it myself at this moment in time but when I go upstairs to shower in a moment I will wash it off and put on some Chanel No 5 instead.

Hold on, aren't you putting it on when you take a shower?
Speaking of which, this reminds me of the whole scent thing for dogs. There are several companies selling it for your pooch.
I think shampoo is one thing to freshen up Fido but expensive scent for a dog?

Well, I also am thinking of people selling air from different places. YOu used to be able to buy California air etc in little cans.

The Selfridge’s spokeswoman says “"Choix is a dressing table artwork, a collector's item that will appeal to lovers of surrealism and objets d'art, and is an affordable way to buy a piece of Dadadandy's work.”

Does this mean that the bottle (or flacon or whatever it’s called) is supposed to be something special – like the fancy tea-caddies that expensive teas are sometimes sold in? After all, people will pay serious money for antique scent-bottles. Or am I just trying too hard to make some sort of sense out of a piece of nonsense?

Reminds me of a couple of years ago, when Cumbria Tourist Board put a bottle of 'fresh air from the English Lake District' up for auction. I think it sold for £46.

I wonder how 'fresh' it is now.

Ask me nicely and I might bottle up some Jersey air.

I copied the idea of 'air' when I was visiting friends who live abroad. One was originally from Nelson in Lancashire, the other from Salford. So went to both places with empty pop bottles, and had photos taken while I was 'collecting' the air at each place. My friends thought it was brilliant, as I put labels on the bottles with the photos to prove that it was 'genuine air'! But I did get some funny looks when I was waving an empty bottle around in the middle of Nelson town centre!

Well the air 'round here varies, depending on which way the wind is blowing you could have eau de moo (the methane processers up the road), eau de chook poo (the chook farms around and about), eau de mushroom (the mushroom farm where they use chook poo to grow the fungus!) or oh gee, there's eau de alfalfa (the lucerne paddocks after the hay's been baled), erm, there's always eau de floodwaters (after it rains and the water lies around all brown and smelly after 3 or 4 days . . . phew) . . . any takers?

Seriously, I'm developing my own line of perfumes, all natural etc . . .gonna make 'em to order for all in sundry (must upgrade my website)
