Well, as my childhood wasn't that long ago, i still manage to find most of my favourite TV shows, playing on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network.

I used to get up early in the morning to watch Cheez TV (Channel 10 for Australian residents), and watch Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z before i went to school.

I remember though, aged about 5, watching hours of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Still watch it now ), Scooby Doo, Postman Pat, Thomas The Tank Engine, Noddy, Captain Planet, Power Rangers, Sesame Street and basically whatever else was on.

When i was a little kid, we never had the 'bands' like The Wiggles and Hi-5, even though i watch them now

You took the words right out of my mouth!!! I loved shows like that. When I was 5 though, I liked teletubbies, oh the shame.

Ooh! There are loads of kids shows that I used to love in the eighties. (I still watch some of the re-runs now!)

The Fraggles, He Man, Trapdoor!, Dangermouse
Button Moon (Looking back now it was pretty rubbish but I loved it when i was 5!)
The Moomins (That used to creep me out though!)
Rainbow (Rod, Jane and Freddy used to annoy me even then though, and I always thought that George was a girl!)
I used to LOVE The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Transformers, ThunderCats,
Jamie and the Magic Torch
Duckula?

There is one in particular i'm thinking of but I can't remember what it was called.. oh Star Fleet! Used to love that but the evil woman with one eye (or something) was a bit creepy. The music to that was great!

Memory Lane trip.. there are just so many! When I was a bit older I loved Grange Hill and Byker Grove

Any Canadians out there . . .
If you're a child from the 60s, 70s, or 80s, then you will remember the following shows . . .

The Friendly Giant - Who can forget Jerome the giraffe and Rusty the Rooster and the music concerts. And the quote "Look up, way up, and you'll find Rusty."

Mr. Dressup - His puppets Casey & Finnegan and of course, the "Tickle Trunk" which had costumes and craft supplies and games a plenty. Something new came out of that "Tickle Trunk" every episode.

Let me know if you remember too . . . who cares if we're "aging" ourselves . . . ha, ha

Meliann, I am Canadian and when I was a little boy I used to watch these shows.
Every morning from Monday to Friday before I was old enough to go to school, we watched in the following order: Friendly Giant, Mr. Dressup, and then Sesame Street.
Even today, my sister's children are able to watch repeats of Mr. Dressup. They also watch Sesame Street and I think but I am not sure that Sesame Street is all new shows. These shows were very educational for young children.

I remember my favourites were He-Man and She-Ra, Thundercats, Voltron, Captain Planet, X-Men (cartoon) and Fraggle Rock. I remember Wonder World, except when I saw it there was a redheaded woman Pascal Fox or something like that hosting it. Possibly a different program? There were also some strange and slightly disturbing cartoons I remember such as Cities of Gold and Twins of Destiny. There was also some other weird cartoon featuring futuristic pirates--can't remember what that was called but it used to be on Australia's ABC (channel 2) network at around 5.30 weekdays if anyone out there has any kind of similar memory?

The Wonder World with Pascal Fox was the same premise - only quite a few years later. I remember both versions - Simon Townsend hosted the original, with his dog, Woodrow.

I also remember so many shows from when I was growing. I loved the Hanna-Barbera cartoons, the Warner Bros. cartoons, Fraggle Rock was a big favourite, as was Metal Mickey, Grange Hill, and Marmalade Atkins (I can't for the life of me remeber what that was called - Educating Marmalade rings a bell, but maybe that's because it was in the theme song....!).

I also remember Battle of the Planets (Which I think was the G-Force one someone else mentioned), and a show called Quark.

There were so many good, clean shows on "way back when". Perhaps I'm just having a senior's moment, but they seem so much better than the stuff on these days.

LaLa was the best! Everything else was just...not yellow.

One of my friends has photoshopped an image of the teletubbies to combine it with a Halo screen shot from behind a gun. It's a bit evil.

There wasn't a lot available and we didn't have a television set until I was about eight or nice. I did used to watch television at some friends' homes on my way home from school on occasions however. I remember Andy Pandy, Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men and Muffin the Mule. Nothing else springs to mind.

I loved Scooby Doo.
Many of the ones I used to watch have already been mentioned, such as Inspector Gadget, Captain Planet, Ducktales,Talespin.
Still remember Count Duckula, Bonkers, Funnybones(the skeleton one, mainly because I used to like the theme song)
Trapdoor, Samaurai Pizza Cats, Widget the World Watcher....the list is endless.
They are beginning to release many of these on DVD.

You can find many of the 80/90's cartoon introductions, complete with theme song on youtube, they bring back memories.

Not sure whether this is more like nostalgia than that they were really good shows, but indeed there don't seem to be the same kinds of animated series as Transformers, Mask, Thundercats, Dinoriders, etc.

Captain Planet and Seabert were disgustingly politically correct but unforgettable.

A lot of effort was also put into the opening tunes of those shows, like that of MASK and others, all screaming guitars and 80's style over the top vocals. The only series coming close recently (well, relatively at least) in that respect is pokémon.

Also loved the Animaniacs, especially 'Pinky and the Brain', and some shows (like Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo) which aired here on Cartoon Network, which subsequently got a Dutch version (grr.. those kids should just learn English!) and then disappeared from basic cable completely.

Then another important thing to mention. On Dutch television, there used to be these children's shows in the morning, which are now just about extinct. Telekids was my absolute favourite, with two presenters Carlo & Irene whose style you would at least call 'chaotic'. At the end of the show there used to be a Mega Blubber (as in mud) Power Race, where kids had to perform different tasks, including holding on for as long as possible on 'Harry de Hengst': Harry the Stallion.

Absolute highlight was 'Pittige Tijden', a parody of Holland's most popular soap opera, the day's famous guest participating. The characters were hilarious, over the top caricatures of the characters in the real show.

I mentioned cartoon theme songs on youtube, the best ones are medlys where people have different cartoon themes running for several minutes on one video.
I've just found one user who has videos entitled Classic Cartoon intros, each are 10 minutes long and he seems to have 36 of them.
Search classic cartoon intro and they should come up.

thanks for the tip, kj358. I have seen some of those medleys when my brother was looking them up. Many of those shows we watched together.

I forgot to mention that when I was about.. 8-10, I guess, there used to be reruns of the Thunderbirds on saturday evening. I used to take a bath before it and then we would all watch Thunderbirds together, me with my hair wet. I remember they always saved the day in the very last minute, which was quite exciting. It was kind of a family thing.

We always used to watch the Cosby Show and Full House, too. All re-runs, plus whatever you call it when you air foreign tv shows 5 years later. Same goes for those other family-oriented shows like Family Ties, Growing Pains, Who's the Boss, Alf.. Perfect Strangers!

Also, of course, MacGyver and The A-Team. And M*A*S*H. erm... Magnum, P.I... Nurses.. Happy Days, Mork & Mindy..

Finally, in my early teens I watched 21 Jump Street, I was totally in love with Johnny Depp.

so there, I watched too much tv as a kid and now I'm ruined :P

I watched tons of kids' shows back in the 60's, but I think among my favorites were the Gerry Anderson puppet shows (I have a quiz on them), especially Stingray, Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet, "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids", "Mack and Meyer for Hire", Rocky and Bullwinkle, George of the Jungle, Beany and Cecil, the Looney Tunes shows, the Soupy Sales shows and especially the Three Stooges shorts, the ones with Curly especially! (I also saw the Stooges cartoons!)

You know, I watched a lot of TV as a kid, but frankly, most of it wasn't very good, and I don't remember them with that much fondness. Gilligan's Island, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched.... Not exactly classic TV.

There were a few choice bits, though - Rockey and Bullwinkle and Bugs Bunny spring to mind. We had a fifteen minute show here in Canada called The Friendly Giant, where the giant and his friends the rooster and the giraffe would read a book - I think I'm dating myself with that, as it must have been fairly early days of TV for anyone to have thought THAT was exciting.... It was nice, though, it was like having the book read to you by a nice uncle, with some funny cousins making smart remarks in the background.

As a child in the 60's, we had only one TV and three channels for a family of nine. Cartoons were only on Saturday mornings, although I remember watching Romper Room and Captain Kangaroo during the week. Besides the Road runner/Bugs Bunny show, I remember watching the Flintstones and the Jetsons. And my alltime favorite was Johnny Quest.
We used to watch Wide World of Sports on Saturday afternoons. Some other shows I remember watching were Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom,, Wonderful World of Disney, and Bonanza.

The true show of our childhood was Lassie. They often had two or three part "cliff hangers" where Lassie became lost and had to struggle her way home. My younger sister used to cry all week and no one could convince her Lassie was really safe and sound. She just knew the poor dog was cold and hungry. At one point my Mom wanted to ban the show from our watch list.

And, loved being scared. Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Alcoa Presents One Step Beyond. The Twilight Zone. It was a real disappointment if one of those shows wasn't sufficiently terrifying.

And don't forget The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday night. Most people stopped whatever they were doing to see who his guests would be. Those guests varied wildly -from The Doors and the Beatles to Topo Gigio the talking French mouse puppet. You just never knew. Apparently sticking to a hard format was never a big concern there on the Sullivan stage.

Also on Sunday afternoon [ I think] was Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour. Not as showy as Ed was, the set was plain and one usually got treated to accordian playing housewives or toddlers singing opera. Again, not a format statement within a mile of the place -but some pretty weird and wonderful talent because of it.

It's hard to go past Captain Kangaroo, with Mr Greenjeans. But the best part was the Tom Terrific cartoon - he could change into any suitable shape, but you always knew that (for example) the envelope was Tom because his funnel-cap was in the corner. One Christmas the three of us all got funnels in our stockings, squealed in unison "Tom Terrific hats!" and wore them for the rest of the day. Three- and four-year olds can take pleasure in almost anything!
