I noticed that someone started What is the worst movie you've ever seen? I thought that It would be great to hear about the movies that you thought were the best. It may be hard for some of you. I know it is for me but my choice for best movie would have to be The Others. The reason why I picked it was beause I never jump during a horror movie and this one is the only one to make me jump. I never jump! Never! You can ask sillylily. It's just not in my nature. I don't get scared during those because I know that they're not real. So if it can scare me I like it. I hope everyone else has a good one. [ 05-01-2002, 07:23 AM: Message edited by: aprilshower ]

One of the best movies I've seen is a thriller called WAIT UNTIL DARK, starring Audrey Hepburn. She plays a blind woman who is terrorized by drug dealers. That's all I'm going to tell you about the plot. There is one scene in this movie that literally makes me jump at least a foot off of my chair. I've seen the film many times, but still jump at this scene. It's a shame that it's no longer shown in theaters...seeing the audience reaction to this scene is a riot.
Try to rent it. You won't be disappointed.

Several excellent movies from way back when for me are: The Imitation of Life, The Golden Arm, A Woman of Substance. I don't know if you can rent them on video or dvd? ![[Smile]](images/icons/smile.gif)

The best movie that I have ever seen would have to be Silence of the Lambs.....I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

My favorite movie? The Odyssey starring Armand Assante as Odysseus, Isabella Rossellini as Athena (Oh, my goddess ![[Razz]](images/icons/tongue.gif) ), Bernadette Peters as Circe, and Vanessa Williams as Calypso. It's pretty true to the greatest epic ever written.. now, if only they made The Iliad on the wide screen.........

The best movie I've ever seen (I have to admit I haven't seen that many) must be "The Thomas Crown Affair". I saw the re-make with Pierce Brosnan and I loved the plot!! Great movie!

Chinatown is easily my favourite, and I've seen a lot of movies. Personally though, I find it hard to decide which film is the best so I have favourites from every genre.
Drama - Scent of a Woman Comedy - Young Frankenstein Action - Die Hard Thriller - Chinatwon Horror - Halloween Sci-Fi - The Empire Strikes Back Musical - Grease
I could add more, but those ones definitely top my list.

Can't make my mind up...so I'll cheat and list a few.. Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" - stunning work (almost without edits) of medieval Russian painter. There is nothing like this film - it is breathtakingly original. Bergman's "Wild Strawberries" - beautiful and profound meditation on life from Sweden's greatest director Fellini's "8 1/2" - incredibly vivid and complex exploration of film-making, Catholicism and Italian luvvies ! Every scene glows with an almost mythological intensity. "The Godfather Pt 1 & 2 excluding part 3 !" I think Coppola's re-edit for TV was best. Possibly the nearest an American director gets to the gravitas of European film-makers. All the films based on Pagnol's books - "Jeanne de Florrette" "The Glory of My Father" etc The end of "My Mother's Castle" will break your heart, guaranteed ! Wonderful evocation of Provence - as good as going on holiday ! Charles Laughton's "Night of the Hunter" - mesmerising performance from Robert Mitchum, the river scenes are pure cinema magic with a captivating score. Hitchcock's "Vertigo" - as near to being in a dream as it is possible to get without falling asleep. "Top Hat" with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers - crackling wit, scintillating dance - comedy writers should be forced to study this film in detail. Visconti's "Death in Venice" - the longest music vid ever. Will convert the uninitiated to Mahler if nothing else does. Zhang Yimou's "To Live" Moving portryal of Mao's China. Oh God, when the daughter leaves home....very funny in places too. Lean's "Dr Zhivago" A patchy masterpiece but perhaps the only British movie which has rivalled the greats. "The Scent of Green Papaya" - Vietnamese film - enchanting, and not a Nam veteran in it ! "The General" Buster Keaton's silent masterpiece, scandalously little-known, highly inventive and very funny. "Annie Hall" Woody Allen never surpassed this comedy classic. "The Odd Couple" Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon - if ever living with someone drove you crazy this is the film for you ! "The Seven Samurai" Kurosawa's masterly depiction of a Japanese village threatened by bandits. The No style of acting seems overdramatic at first but this is a thrilling and profound journey through the harsh realities of war. His "The Hidden Fortress" inspired "Star Wars" ! "The Sound of Music" Iknow, I know... "The Chess Players" Sayarat Ray. It's a long time since I saw this film but all of his films (eg "Charulata") are a wonderful insight into Indian culture. "Lost Horizon" Like all old movies this is decidedly creaky round the edges...but the scene where the hero leaves Shangri-La - words cannot describe the power of this moment and Robert Coleman's performance here will haunt you for the rest of your life !. "Grand Hotel" "I vant to be alone..." This is the one ! One of the most fabulous and life-affirming films ever made. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" Still silly after all these years. "Jules et Jim" - Truffaut's masterpiece - the photography is strikingly original even 40 years on. "Mary Poppins" Invention and charm oozes from this children's film. Watch the credits carefully at the end for one final surprise. "2001 A Space Odyssey" A bit much, maybe - but the only film I have watched where the whole cinema audience remained rooted in their seats goggling at the (very long) final credits right to the end, and for a few minutes after the curtains closed too ! "Richard III" Possibly the best Shakespeare film ever made. Olivier's performance was hilariously lampooned by Peter Sellars, but if you can overlook this you will understand why he was the greatest actor in the world and how over-rated Kenneth Branagh is. "Young Frankenstein" Well, hilarious, even more so when you see the original Frankenstein films...

If the best movie for an individual is the one they've seen the MOST, and never tire of... for me, it would be a tie between 'Star Trek II- The Wrath of Khan' and 'Red Dawn'. 'Red Dawn' was kind of cheesy, but it had SO many good actors before they were famous. Any time there is NOTHING on TV, I know I can always pop in either 'Khan' or 'Dawn'.

While i havent heard of most of them i gotta agree with ingilby on The General its brilliant. I was lucky enough to have a teacher in high school who introduced us to movies beyond Star Wars and this was one.

Ingilby has the right idea and great taste, in my opinion - there are a million wonderful movies out there. I loved 'Andrei Rublev' too, but Tarkovsky's 'Nostalia' is a real masterpiece. Carol Reed's 'The Third Man' is close to perfection, and as far as current releases go, well, it has to be the one-and-only 'Otesanek' from Svankmajer. It's the one movie I've come away from in a while that really really caught me.

I'm going to have to go for a list as well I'm afraid folks ! Drama - The Shawshank Redemption, 12 Angry Men, Scent of a Woman (and ANY DeNiro film !) Action - The Matrix, Lethal Weapon(s) Comedy - This is Spinal Tap, Withnail & I, Life of Brian Foreign Language - Life is Beautiful (La vita e bella) War - Full Metal Jacket Sci-fi - Star Wars, Blade Runner Martial Arts - ANY Jackie Chan - fave is "Wheels on Meals" !! Overall, I would have to go for GoodFellas, although Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy run it very close, with DeNiro's best performance coming in Awakenings (I've still never watched that with anyone else because I ALWAYS cry when he says "Mom ???" !! ![[Embarrassed]](images/icons/blush.gif) ) I'll probably think of 10 more now and kick myself !!! To choose the best movie that I have ever seen is a tough one. Being a big softy and a hopless romantic, I would have to say hands down it would have to be, American President. As always, Michael Douglas is wonderful!

I have seen alot of movies, so it's kinda hard to pick just one favorite. I would have to say Toy Story 1 & 2 and Batman Forever, only because I know all the words.

Hmm. So many to choose from. Let's see..A Clockwork Orange - I've watched it more than a 100 times (honest!). It's just brilliant.Sunset Boulevard - I just watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago and I was shocked, stunned, etc etc. What great acting and script! The Garden of the Finzi-Continis - this is an Italian movie from around 1972. It's so beautiful and sad, and the photography is stunning.Fight Club - I personally think Edward Norton's performance was brilliant, I mean he deserved an Oscar for this one! It's an amazing movie, everyone should watch it (twice, of course).Todo sobre mi madre - Spanish film by Almodovar, beautiful, just beautiful. Cecilia Roth is one of the best Spanish-speaking actresses.Apocalypse now - it gives me the creeps, it's so well done. Everyone gave an oustanding performance in this one.Others:Run Lola Run, from Germany - maybe too overrated by now, but whoever directed it is a genius.Dog Day Afternoon - After watching this movie 5 years ago, I realized Al Pacino has got to be the greatest actor alive.Full Metal Jacket, 2001: A Space Oddyssey, Barry Lyndon Butterfly, from Spain - just sad and beautiful.Red, Blue, White - from France - Love them!La Femme Nikkita, from France - I've never watched the tv show based on it, but the movie was so cool, what a great story. And I could go on and on but I gotta get some sleep lol.

Wow thanks so much for recommending this movie. I wasn't interested in seeing it as I thought it would be like any other horror/suspense movie: predictable. But it was great, those last scenes were so flawless, muuuuch better than The Sixth Sense.

I have just joined so this is a late reply. But the best movie for me was "Arthur", I laughed the whole way through the movie. He played the best drunk I have ever seen. He may have gone on his past, but it was the best..
