It is a great shame the do not show his films much now, or indeed any silent films, on TV. I think it is because most people refuse to watch anything not in colour. I once saw some Keaton films at a cinema in London a few years ago with live piano accompaniment - people were falling about laughing a lot more than you usually see watching a modern film. A recent Tate prize went to a video artist in which he celebrated a famous stunt of Keaton's - where the wall of a house falls on him and he survives unscathed by popping up through the open window... unfortunately this did not stimulate a revival of his work.

Thanks for the compliment - I feel a little shame-faced about raising a slight quibble about "Nostagia". Now we are talking hard-core gloves-off Tarkovsky here...admittedly technically it is superior to his previous work. I would be interested to hear why you think this better than his earlier films. Anyway, good to see another enthusiast - do you think, at the risk of sounding morbidly pretentious, one has to experience death (preferably not first-hand) to appreciate Tarkovsky fully ? I agree with "The Third Man ", but what of Reed's "Odd Man Out" ? I think this film is really extraordinairy too, in a very different way. Svankmajer - woahh ! You have strong nerves ! I look forward to this recent scarifying opus but I will probably have to sleep with the light on for a few weeks afterwards....

The best movie I have ever seen? hmmm... It would probably have to be "The House of Mirth" with Gillian Anderson. It was sad, funny, and all the other emotions there are. It was based on a book, and they went word for word, so it was kinda hard to understand, the book being written in like 1908, but all in all it was great and Gillian is a great actress.

If memorable means good then I'd have to say 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher.
After the film there was none of the usual chatter normally heard when an audience leaves a cinema. Most left in silence. Perhaps mulling over the sadness of it.

It's quite hard to choose just one movie, but, at the top of the list for me would have to be The Changeling , with George C. Scott, it's not new, or fabulously filled with special effects or anything, but it's a wonderful thriller movie, one that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time I see it. Another would definately have to be Fight Club , I've seen it many a time, and everytime, is just as good as the first. Same goes for Se7en ...Kevin Spacey is just so evil. He was amazing in The Usual Suspects too. And one final movie, that ranks right up there in the top, is a very real, very touching film called Longtime Companion . Anyone with a heart would really love this film, with Campbell Scott, Patrick Cassidy, Dermot Mulroney, and Bruce Davison. Brilliant film, that's all I can say.

A year ago I would have picked 'The Matrix' as my favourite but now it has been replaced by 'Amelie'. It is a really really beautiful movie. All of you who haven't seen it - just go and rent the video! I'm 99% sure you won't be disappointed.

Hmm. Not easy...have to put it into categories. Humor-The Burbs Horror-Arachnaphobia Drama-Immortal Beloved Sci-Fi-ORIGINAL StarWars trilogy I'm not sure if Deep Impact would be considered action or sci-fi, but it's up there too.

The best movie I've ever seen would have to be "Interview With The Vampire". I was fifteen years old, and it impressed me more than I can say. And since that day, I knew that Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt can REALLY act (and don't get paid for just a flash of their smile or something).
But there are lots and lots of other great movies out there... let me think...
... like "Great Expectations", "Ever After", "Scream", "The Ninth Gate", "Stigmata", "Jawbreaker", "Moulin Rouge", "The Lord of the Rings"... far too many to list here
I like nearly all sorts of movies, so don't be surprised about this rather funny mixture of genres

I have quite a few "best" movies:
Sci Fi / Action-- (my favorite category) Predator, Blade Runner, Mission to Mars, Aliens, Gattaca, Artificial Intelligence, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Excalibur, Terminator II
Drama -- Death of a Salesman (with Dustin Hoffman), Carlitos Way, Blue Velvet, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Fight Club
Comedy -- The Stupids, Life of Brian, The Party, Safety Last (an old silent film with Harold Lloyd)
Horror -- Eraserhead, Legend of Hell House, It, Freaks, The Devil Doll
Foreign -- The Seventh Seal, Frida (Cuban film about Frida Kahlo), Pathfinder
I'll probably think of a dozen or so more after this is posted. I'm not much of a T.V. fan but I love movies.

Oh my gosh, Jellee! I saw The Changeling back when I was in high school, and it scared the fire out of me! Every time I ask someone if they have seen it, they say they have never heard of it. I was beginning to think I had only dreamt of watching it. I am glas someone else has seen it.
I have so many favorite movies, but the tops of the list has always been "The Wizard of Oz".

Wow! I thought I knew what my favorite movie was until I read all these posts and now I'm all confused! Well, love stories, comedies and horror movies are my favorite so.... Ever After, Ocean's Eleven and Scream (although I liked all 3, i think 2 is my favorite) I love just about anything that will make me cry, laugh or jump. Oh, but I don't like the kind of scary movies with weird stuff (like the Exorcist). I like the kind where there is an actual person doing things and you have to figure out who it is. Just thought I would clarify.

Hmm... I suppose the best movie I ever saw was Dogma. It was quite annoying with all the cussing, and I never want to see it again, but it was so amazingly written over the Bible. It really made you question things.
I Am Sam was simply wonderful. I dern near cried, and I never cry. It was such a sweet story.
Ocean's Eleven was an astounding movie. It just kept twisting! It kept you wondering all throughout the movie. And it really made you root for the bad guys! The only way that movie could be improved upon is if Julia Roberts wasn't in it. I just don't care for her.
However, the best movie I've seen is LadyHawke. I know all the lines to it, and can quote it without even thinking about it. I just love that movie.
