In a heap: Angela's Ashes, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Carrie, Moulin Rouge, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulin, La turbulance des fluides (just came back from seeing that one...wow!), Full Metal Jacket, Being John Malkovitch, Quills, Lock Stock and two smoking Barrels, A Fish Called Wanda, The Prophecy, A Life Less Ordinary and Waking Ned Devine. Also, the first Star Wars trilogy, just for the childhood memories. There's probably many more, but those are the ones that I never get tired of seeing.

I would have to say that one of the best movies I have seen is 'Step Mom'. Many movies are very emotional but don't cause me to cry but this one certainly opened the flood gates. If I get the chance I watch it over and over because it is such a great movie. I also like the fact that it stars Julia Roberts because shes my favourite actor!

I can’t make up my mind as to which movie is my favorite, but the last movie I saw, Kolya, was great.
The storyline was captivating and fun. It is one of those movies that pulls on your strings making you happy, sad, and everything in between.
The child who played the part of Kolya was convincing, so convincing that watching it it seems that scenes like where he was laughing while watching the Russian cartoon and where he was in the bathtub crying for his grandmother, weren’t parts of a movie, but a glimpse into his real life.
All of the actors were great, the scenery was great, and I can’t think about anything about the movie the movie that wasn’t great.
I loved it.

Oh my goodness I adore that movie! I can't believe I didn't mention it!
I didn't know if I wanted to see it or not, since I don't like Hayden Christensen, but he did a wonderful job. That is just one of the best movies ever made.

I have to narrow it down by genre:
Comedy--Young Frankenstein
Drama--Citizen Kane
Horror--Dracula 1931
Romantic Comedy--Singin in the Rain
Sci-fi--The Fly 1958
Foreign--Life is Beautiful (without the English subtitles!)
Romance--Indiscreet 1958
I'm the old movie nut in the family. How'd you guess??

since I have to put my two cents in: FIGHT CLUB is the best movie I have ever seen! I can't get enough of that movie. It is the most brilliant movie I've ever watched. The book is quite good too. I just LOVE Edward Norton and Brad Pitt in it. Here's some of my other favorites: MOULIN ROUGE, Oceans 11, Dude Where's My Car, Evolution, Billy Madison, Big Daddy, Mr. Deeds, Happy Gilmore, Charlie's Angels, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Princess Bride Some of those aren't the best, but I love them anyway!

Mine would have to be The Shining. Jack played the perfect madman and Duvall played the perfect annoyance. I thought it was the perfect combination. Plus I like dark comdy, so I was treated to a few laughs while watching it. The stair scene was a classic. Some of my other favorites include The Professional, Good Will Hunting, Braveheart, National Lampoons Animal House, Christmas Vacation, Goodfellas Cheers to all!!!!!

I like Groundhog Day too, but my all time favourite is The Ghost and Mrs Muir with Gene Tierney and the marvelous Rex Harrison. I'm a sucker for those old black n white movies. And I always wanted to look like Gene Tierney, unfortunately I don't!!!

Understandably, there are some great movies mentioned in this thread. Including some of my favourites: One Flew Over The Cuckoo Nest, The Shawshank Redemption, Chinatown, Mary Poppins, The Blues Brothers, Usual Suspects & Life Of Brian.
But my personal top five is: 1. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 2. The African Queen 3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off 4. Blazing Saddles 5. From Russia With Love

My favorite dramatic movie would have to be The Lion in Winter. Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn were excellent! It was interesting to see a young Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton. For comedy, I'd have to pick Blazing Saddles. Non stop laughs from beginning to end.

SPOILERS - CONTAINS SPOILERS - WARNING - CONTAINS SPOILERS - SPOILERS
Deciding on the best movie I have ever seen was not as easy as I thought. It took me absolutely ages. I finally got it down to my top ten and from there I put them in order:
1) 2001: A space Odyssey (UK, 1969, Stanley Kubrick) Based in part on Arthur Clarke's "The Sentinel" this film addresses the three really big questions; what are we, where did we come from and where are we going? Other important questions are addressed just in passing; like can there be artificial intelligence (a theme Kubrick later tried to return to) and will humanity move out in to the rest of the solar system. There are also some amazing characters and images; a dying computer singing "Daisy", the Sentinel itself, Space flight as psychedelic flying dream and a very violent man-ape. The superb special effects still look more real than anything in Star Wars or Star Trek. Finally for the British in the audience it also had Mr. Rigsby on a space station. There may well be a better film but it has not been made yet. 2) Bambi (US, 1942, David D. Hand) I have not watched this film for more than a decade, if I do I will blub my eyes out when Bambi's mother dies and I don't think a man of my age should be doing that. The film introduces some very big ideas, like death and growing up in a way that makes them easier for children to understand. It has memorable and "cute" characters; Bambi, Thumper and Flower yet it is not completely soaked in saccharine like later Disney productions. 3) Ran (Japan, 1985, Akira Kurosawa ) - This re-setting of Shakespeare's King Lear in feudal Japan far transcends the play itself. The cinematography and setting are magnificent the costumes sumptuous. The battle sequences in which soldiers carrying brightly coloured flags emerge from the mist and smoke only to disappear again are juxtaposed with close combat and the dead are haunting. If I close my eyes I can see them now yet I have not seen the film for four years. 4) Heaven's Gate (US, 1980, Michael Chimino) The best Western ever made if only just edging out the excellent Little Big Man and The Searchers. Yet the US critics panned it, perhaps because of its Socialist worldview. Based Loosely on the Johnson County war of the 1880's. Patrician Marshal sides with the East-European immigrants against landowners when they start culling people. In the final moment of the shoot out the Capitalists and their hired guns are about to be defeated they are saved by the US Cavalry in a magnificent pastiche of the traditional settler rescue. In defeat the Patrician marshal eventually finds himself back with his own class. 5) The Long Good Friday (UK, 1979, John Mackenzie) I find it strange that this little British movie is my favourite gangster film, it is such an American genre. Bob Hoskin's portrayal of violent gang boss trying to move into legitimate business and reign in his natural tendencies is only matched by Helen Mire's playing of his clever wife. 6) La Femme Nikita/Nikita (France, 1990, Luc Besson) Style over substance but what magnificent style. The plot in brief a young girl becomes an assassin for a shadowy organisation of the state. Anne Parillaud in her underwear with a high tech rifle waiting to assassinate a target is one of the most erotic images in the movies. Many other images first used in this movie have found their way into others. 7) The cook, the thief, his wife, her lover (UK, 1990, Peter Greenaway) A strange film. Its beautiful cinematography is very reminiscent of that in Ran. Different colour schemes represent different time of year. The plot in brief, a gourmet gangster (Thief) opens a fabulous restaurant, his Wife meets Lover in restaurant and is aided and abetted in finding places for intimacy with him by the head Chef (Cook). Thief finds out, kills Lover. Wife gets Cook to cook Lover and feeds him to Thief. 8) Cabaret (US?, 1972, Bob Fosse ) A film to make you think. An oblique look at the rise of Nazism in Germany through the eye of an American Cabaret dancer, her friends and lovers. By the time the little boy stands up and sings "Tomorrow belongs to me" you know you are in the centre of something wicked. 9) The Belles of St. Trinian's (UK, 1954, Frank Launder) I always loved this comedy based on Searle's cartoons. The quantum transformation from revolting snotty brat to sex bomb as the girls got older, there was no transition state amused me no end. Alistair Sim as the head mistress Miss. Friton is a delight, there is George Cole as Flash Harry a proto-Arfa Daley and of course the immortal Joyce Grenfell. What more can I say, a misogynist's nightmare 10) Captain Blood (US, 1935, Michael Curtiz) Errol Flynn was by all accounts a horrible person but he was also the consummate action hero. This pirate tale is certainly dated now but there is panache and style you just don't get in a modern film.
Regards,
Tielhard

Speaking of Tim Robbins, I'd have to say my all-time favourite movie is 'Jacob's Ladder' . I don't think it lasted all that long in the theatres, but it is definitely worth a rental or two, in my opinion. It has the dubious honour of being one of only three films that have moved me to tears. In response to the 'Life as a House' comments, I hope this doesn't offend its fans, but I'd say this one is NOT worth renting. I found it to be one of the most manipulative and formulaic bits of drivel I've ever endured. At least it gave me a laugh though.
For me, other contenders in the 'best' list would be 'Blade Runner', 'Taxi Driver', 'Bringing out the Dead', 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Ed Wood', 'Grifters', 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', 'This Boy's Life', 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure', 'Grosse Pointe Blank', 'Fargo', 'Raising Arizona', 'Better off Dead' (80's cheese though it is) and 'It's a Wonderful Life'.

There are way too many great films to mention them all so I'll just mention a few; Jaws, The Shawshank Redemption, The Bone Collector, Halloween, Scream, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. There are many more but I don't want to bore you.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a best film. As much as I admire Terry Gilliam what a joke. Although I know it was filmed to resemble a cartoon in my opinion it did not work. Life as a House wins my vote.
