Why is it, that the cheaper the toilet paper, the more glue they use?

I'm sure it's because the glue is cheap too. I once visited a factory where they manufactured toilet rolls - amongst other things. It was actually quite interesting!

I mean the glue that is used to keep the first sheet stuck down. The cheaper brands just seem to use a lot more than the more expensive ones.

I just assumed they compressed it in some way, didn't realise it was glue.

If they put it in a paper wrapper or a plastic bag, why do they need to glue the end down? One of those things to ponder... Like why do they put 1kg of cereal in a box you could fit 3kg in? (But that's another chain...)

I heard that one firm had introduced toilet papers printed with urban myths but it was just a tissue of lies.

Just as an after thought, who were the jokers that christened Lou Rawls?

I don't know, SOTHC.
but it concerns me because our lives are such that we're earnestly discussing toilet paper.

There was a commercial radio advert quite recently, where some frustrated guy groaned "oh no, the other way", as he was trying to detach a strip of toilet paper. The point was that the glue went through several strips, making it impossible to know which way the loo roll was supposed to unfurl. The advert in question was for better quality rolls which didn't suffer this problem!

I saw a segment on an episode of "How It's Made" on the Science Channel once regarding toilet paper. The episode didn't mention what company they were profiling, but it was rather interesting. The particular company rolled it out in 65" (1.65m) rolls, then cut them to 4" (10.2cm) each.

Let us plumb the depths here, and get to the bottom of the discussion.

Dave said that the paper he saw was 10.2cm square- I have just checked two brands of Australian paper, and they are both 10 x 11 cms. I wonder if there is any reason why ours are bigger than US?

What about Europe, or Canada? Are they different sizes again, and if so, can anyone speculate why?

Well, our bums must be even bigger. I've just measured a sheet of my paper, and it's 12.3 cm by 11 cm.

OK slightly off the mark...but did you know that many Charcol briquettes used for our BBQ'S are made from pulverised toilet paper screened out at the sewerage plant and mixed with charcol dust and squashed into briquettes?

thats why I only use lumpwood charcol, lol

I cannot believe that I actually took a ruler into the cloakroom to measure mine, and TT, we must be using the same brand or else that is standard size here.

On a radio phone-in quiz I won a years supply once. My heart sank at the thought of the storage problem but they solved it by actually giving me £50 instead (it was quite some time ago).

Of course we can't forget the industrial rolls of tracing paper businesses use. I've never seen anything thinner, and they're never broken into sheets which lead to over use.

I always use that stuff if I can't find any fine silk or baby lambs.

Ain't that the truth. Hate using that stuff - it seems to smear instead of wipe.

I am resisting all urge to go and measure my rolls.

I couldn't resist the urge and measured mine: 11.4 x 10cm. Italian bums are smaller than the English ones!
