SMH story

"Thousands of Japanese have been swindled". Thousands? Thousands???? This is what happens when people don't go out to the countryside every now and then.

Ther are just so many puns that can be said here but I'll stick with ... they had the wool pulled over their eyes on this one. (feel free to groan)

That is a snip compared to a real poodle which retails for twice that much in Japan.

They must have though they were getting a baaaagain!

If this were closer to the start of the month I'd think it was a joke ... it has to be, doesn' it?

Wow...this can't possibly be real, can it?!
Well, I suppose it can. People can be awfully, um, gullible at times.

But still...sheep?! I think they need to get out a little more.

If it is a joke ... don't let the facts get in the way of a good story!

If it is real. Poor people .. they were fleeced!

So presumably they had been clipped in funny shapes. Jillian, can't you get in on the act and sell a few of yours too?

Better still, to give us all a giggle get jack to give one of your sheep a poodle trim then let us see the results! You could even give it an apricot rinse.

We have shearing coming up in a few weeks - I'll have to see what we can do. I'll try and get the biggest, toughest shearer there to try his hand at wooldressing. Stay tuned!

I think mutton in Japan is worth about $8 a kilo .. with prices like that I don't know why they wouldn't just sell for meat. (because that would be no fun! )

What does the average sheep weigh then?

Can you imagine them taking their 'poodles' for a walk to encourage them to poo and wondering why they are passing strange droppings!

Oh my God! That's absolutely incredible!
It's been in our news today and we are all in awe .

We are used to being tricked into buying dog meat instead of lamb, around Easter time (it's a custom over here to have haggis and lamb roast/stew on Easter). And we can instantly tell the difference bewteen dead sheep or dog (carcasses), so nobody could ever sell us hooved poodles .

Would you be able to tell just by the smell, Denni? Meat eating animals always smell yuck to me but grass eating animals sort of smell sweet. If that makes sense?

Weights .. okay for our sheep which are primarily wool breeders their killed and dressed weight for a big one, couple years old, would be anywhere 40-50kilos. Sheep bred for meat would be heavier. (you learn something new every day, don't you?)

I wonder if they have television sets or have ever read a book. How could you get a poodle and a sheep confused? Baaaad.

I'm not convinced this story is true - but I might be wrong. There don't seem to be any photos available of the actual sheep poodles - only one of a sheep with a poodle clip that is 'like' the ones in question. My (Japanese) hubby is over there at the moment and hadn't heard about it. He googled in Japanese and only came up with a blog talking about it - and no credible news stories. He thinks it was just some sort of publicity stunt and - along the same lines as Copago - made the comment that sheep are so rare in Japan that they're worth more as sheep than as poodles! Who knows though ... weird things do happen in Japan.

Just out of interest could you ask your hubby how much mutton or lamb costs in the butchers? Would $8 be about right?

That price is about right for here, Jill. Imported , of course. We have no sheep here.

There must be parts of Japan where you can buy lamb, but not in the sticks where our house is. For the 9 years I lived there I never once saw it in the local shops. About twice I ordered a frozen leg of lamb from an American mail order place in Kobe - and that was the only time I ever had it. I don't think most people would know how to cook it. They don't have a lot of butcher shops either by the way! You usually buy meat at the supermarket and the price will be given per 100g... $8/kg would be very cheap! A couple of times we had an Aussie style barbie for our friends - and just about had to mortgage the house to pay for the meat ...from the one butcher shop in the city.

Yes, Copago!

I can't exactly describe the smell difference, but I can tell the smell of lamb meat anytime, anywhere. I LOVE lamb meat and we only find it here once a year, on Easter time . Maybe that's why I fell in love with Scotland in an instant - there's lamb everywhere !

I guess we just take buying meats for granted, are all meats hard to get in Romania Mada or just lamb?

No Sue. We have pork, beef, poultry and fish all year's round and they're affordable. Lamb is the only one that's rare.
Romanians live on meat. I would give it up but the vegetables are more expensive .

Not only in Romania! We can only get pork and poultry. All the rest is imported and extremely expensive. Vegetables in abundance though.

Omigosh that is one of the funniest stories I've heard in a while!:) Our dog could almost pass for a lamb.. same mentality too.. he's a poodle/terrier cross and needs shearing once in a while or he gets platinum dreadlocks.

We lived in Wales for years where lamb was plentiful and was our regular sunday dinner. Wonderful meat. In Israel poultry is plentiful, beef cattle quite plentiful and lamb relatively much less available and more expensive unless you have the contacts. We splash out on it occasionally. Worth it.

I feel a bit guilty in admitting that of the meats available I buy lamb the least as I am not overkeen on it, I find it a bit fatty. I fancy it just now and again, perhaps once or twice a year.

I like mutton much more than lamb .. bit of a richer taste, I guess. But it's so abundant in this household that it's easy to get sick of.
Beef would be my favourite
