According to a recent story, and I have no doubt that it is true, when England goes 'smokeless' on July 1st, even Churches and Cathedrals will be required to display No Smoking notices at the entrances. I don't know of anyone that would even think of lighting up in a Church.

What about those that have the smoke as part of the service? I mean, oh I can't ever remember the words for them.

Haha. I guess I sort of understand where they're coming from, but no smoking signs on Churches is overkill IMO.

Smoke free is a good way to go. It's been like that for a while in Nova Scotia and it's nice to go out for a drink without having a lung collapse

The world has gone crazy, full stop. Soon we won't be able to break wind in our home without getting the Governments permission.

Nevertheless, I lived in the UK when people could still smoke on the bus and in the cinema. I'm thinking that none of you would want that back?

We went 'smoke free' at the beginning of the year. I don't know if there are no smoking signs in churches but I do know one sandwich bar got a bit upset at being taken to task for not having a sign, it had been 'non smoking' since opening years ago and couldn't see why they should suddenly now display a sign.

Once smoking is banned in certain areas, those that smoke look for places where it's still safe to light up. If a sign is not posted, the excuse will be "but I didn't see a 'no smoking' sign". I think it's sad that signs have to be put up for that reason.

Those are known as censers [ metal open windowed boxes filled with incense and suspended from chains, which are swung to and fro over the congregation by the priest] I too, am curious to know how they get around 'censoring the censers'....and don't Jewish families have a blessing - a candle smoke ritual in their Friday night Sabbath at home? And how literally are we to take these anti - smoke laws?

What next, I wonder?

Censoring the censers, give them time. One day they'll ban breathing.

In 1955 I visited the Netherlands with my parents. We were thunderstruck to find ash trays on the backs of some of the pews in the Reformed Churches. We were told that in some churches the men smoked - fat cigars, even - during the sermons!

Personally, I think that ALL public places should be 'smoke free'. I used to be a smoker and have now been off them for 4 years (I'm proud to say). I hate walking into a place or standing at the bus stop or going to the 'footy' and having to breath in someone's second hand smoke. I think it is extremely rude and selfish. How dare I have to put up with an uncomfortable (and not to mention medically damaging) situation just so smokers can keep their rights??

Having said that though..............

I see this issue from both sides. I don't think the government or anyone else can tell people they are not 'allowed' to smoke, after all it is their own body. HOWEVER, unfortunately the rest of society has to put up with it also, therefore taking their rights away to clean and fresh air.

So who wins??

Believe it or not, this was not unheard of fifty years ago, at least in the states. Uncommon, yes, but not unheard of.

Is smoking a sin? Google it - lots of responses. Personally I think it's ok if it doesn't affect anyone else. Full stop!(or period or whatever in States). Do what you want in private but don't mess with my air space....

Just so long as the non-smokers don't invade the space that is allowed for smokers, and start complaining. Nothing annoys me more than a group of non-smokers sitting in a designated smoking area (when there is usually room in the non-smoking area!) and having to listen to them go on and on about the smokey atmosphere.

As a previous smoker I have to wholeheartedly agree with you. I used to take great pains to smoke well away from non-smokers and it was infuriating for one to come close to me and then to complain.

In the tobacco producing region of France around the German border, Alsace, they had to put up signs when the regulations said they needed a non smoking section everywhere. The Winstub places in Strasbourg complied, being Alsacians, but, put the sections underneath the stairs! So there was a nasty little table underneath the staircase! And the smokers were next to you! Charming!

I don't think the French ever smoked in church though. I'm surprised, but never saw anyone trying it.

In front of the church, yeah!

I thank you! What I do in my little space is mine.I know smoking is bad for you and everybody around you, but, and there is my point, but what about all the horrible things going on in the world? There is kidnaping of children and what become of them after the kidnapping(Maddie?), murder, rape....the list will just go on and on.Now they ban smoking from public places and what not all.Why don't "they" concentrate on real issues that realy is worth "carrying on" about?Real punishment for horrible, horrible crimes that is going on in this "wonderfull" smokeless world of ours?Sorry if my spelling and grammer is not perfect.

I see your point, however, ALL issues have a voice and as such should be treated with respect. As a global and local community we can't ignore the seemingly 'small' problems just to focus on the large problems. The 'small' problems are important also, especially when it effects our quality of life.

I agree with Sue and Jaxtah , if non-smokers wander into a specifically titled 'Smokers Area' then they have no cause to complain. They have legs and can walk away at any time!

The latest bit of idiotic nonsense concerns three firefighters who are facing a disciplinary hearing for sleeping on the floor instead of in newly purchased reclining chairs. Apparently they are accused of using 'unauthorised rest equipment'. The chairs were purchased as part of a modernisation programme, but couldn't be slept in until the firemen had read a four page Health and Safety document.

Oh boy, you work a fifteen hour shift then need to read a four page document before being permitted to sit down! I wonder if they have been suspended on full pay.

My husband smokes and I much prefer him smoking 20 cigarettes a day instead of drinking 20 beers a day. In 1984 my cousin was killed by a drunk driver my aunt and uncle have never recovered from his death. If given a choice I'd rather travel with a smoker than a drinker.

I, too, smoke. A silly habit but, then, so many habits are, silly. I do not smoke around those that dislike the habit neither do I allow smoking in my car and nor do I smoke when I travel.
But amidst all the hysterical governmental warbling, it might be as well to point out that the carcinogenic belchings of cars and lorries/truck etc, are infinitely more damaging to health than smoking, particularly diesels. Anyone who lives in a major town or city is at grave risk. In the fifties (in the UK) a study was undertaken as to why there was a sudden increase in lung cancer and heart disease. It transpired, although the report for obvious reasons was subsequently quashed, that the rise in these diseases coincided directly with the end of petrol rationing. As the air of the towns and cities became ever more polluted with the filth from private and business owned vehicles, so the death rate increased - and so it shall continue to increase.
This is not to say that smoking is wise or healthy, but I can promise you that a twenty minute walk through your town is the equivalent of twenty cigarettes.
Smokers are an easy mark, although governments shrink from banning such a revenue laden vice, the purveyors of fuel, however, are necessary for our survival: hence, when all the smokers are gone, the death toll will continue to rise.
