I sing alto in the Chamber Choir at the local community college. We had our end of spring semester concert last Thursday along with the handbell ensemble and the jazz choir. I figured that posting the program here might start some interesting conversations so here goes:

Bellissimo Handbell Ensemble
Processional Jubilee – Anna Laura Page
‘Tis a Gift to Be Simple – Traditional Shaker Song
Hornpipe from “Water Music” – G.F. Handel
Serenade – Franz Joseph Haydn
Moment Musical – Franz Schubert
Plink, Plank, Plunk – Leroy Anderson
Three timeless tunes: When Irish Eyes Are Smiling, East Side West Side, In the Good Old Summertime
Pirates of the Caribbean – Klaus Badelt (Yes, the movie theme song, not the one from the ride. Very cool to hear.)
Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring – J.S. Bach, Vocals provided by the Chamber Choir (yep, that’s me!)

Chamber Choir
Hombe – Traditional Kenyan Folksong
Weep O Mine Eyes – a Madrigal from 1599
Sing Me to Heaven – Daniel Gawthrop (our choir favorite)
Pie Jesu – Andrew Lloyd Webber
Shoshone Love Song – Native American Lyrics (women’s song. I sang tenor.)
For the Longest Time – Billy Joel (men’s song)(Love this one!)
I Run to You – Coryn Snyder (written by one of the gals in my choir)
Take Me to the Water – Rollo Dilworth (based on three different spirituals)
Blessing – Katie Moran Bart (based on an Irish blessing)

Vocal Solos
The Flower Duet from Lakne – Delius
Inseparable – Charles Jackson & Marvin Nancy

Vocal Jazz Ensemble
I Got Rhythm – George and Ira Gershwin
Moonglow – Hudson, de Lange & Mills
What A Wonderful World – Weiss and Thiele
At Last – Harry Warren
Sway – Pablo Ruiz
Goodnight, Sweetheart – C. Carter and James Hudson (Love this one, too!)

I'm not sure how interesting others find your post and program but as a former music educator myself I'm impressed and delighted at the variety. I assume that some members of the Chamber Choir were also members of a the other ensembles.

Yes, we did have some overlap. Mostly with the Jazz choir.

I didn't expect to have a huge response, but I figured if one person read this and thought "Gee, that sounds interesting, mabey I should listen to some of these" or "mabey I should join a choir" that the world would be a more beautiful and cultured place.

That's a really nice thought. (And an impressive program!)

At last! A choral lover! Where have you been all my life?

I used to sing tenor in a church choir and never sang anything as varied and difficult as your program, but I would have liked to try. We did sing Schubert's "Mass in G"; one of the other tenors (the Pastorette's husband!!!) wondered what happened to A through F. Not a very cultivated bunch sad to say.

I'm glad you're here.

Oh dear, it all sounds a bit highbrow for my choir! I run a choir for the six and seven year olds at school. We don't audition so we have a wide range of abilities, but they make up for in enthusiasm what they lack in raw talent. We've got a concert coming up in a couple of weeks, in conjunction with a local Male Voice Choir (well, it is Wales!) and these songs are in our programme.

Old Time Music hall songs:-

Alexander's Ragtime Band
My Old Man
It's a Long way to Tipperary/Pack up your Troubles (sung together - the start of part singing!)

Spirituals:-

You'll Never Get to Heaven
Silver Trumpet
This Little Light of Mine

Songs from the Shows:-

Tomorrow (from 'Annie')
Any Dream Will Do (more work on part singing)
The Rhythm of Life (with amended words...)

And to finish

Wimoweh (the Karl Denver Trio and Tight Fit? Pah! - Not nearly as good as our version)
and Siyahamba - more part singing and it's WONDERFUL!

There won't be a dry eye in the house, guaranteed!

We don't audition either. Chamber Choir is a for-credit class at my college. Technically it is "Music 25". Basically all that is required is that you show up and try, but the better vocalists tend to gravitate towards us due to sheer love of singing. Like the two soloists for Pie Jesu. I so envy their voices. If you haven't picked up on it, I'm a female tenor with a secondary alto range. That is the song that makes me wish I could sing high soprano.
Then there is the alto soloist from Hombe. We've been friends since middle school and she has the most amazing range. She can sing all the way from high soprano (just below the note that shatters glass, no less!) down to high bass! Tell me you don't envy that!

I've only heard of a few of those songs.
